Good morrow to you, dear BEAR NEWS junkies! The news this month in BEARS is IMPORTANT, as always, but it's also mostly good! The bears are waking up from their winter hibernation -- despite whatever garbage winter-type early spring faux weather system may or may not have moved in earlier this week above the IMPORTANT BEAR NEWS cave -- and bears which are woke are also, coincidentally, active! Bears making friends, bears making mischief, bears being bears -- it's all happening this week, and we're glad as ever to be able to bring it to you. We apologize for the delay in posting -- as the forthcoming BEAR NEWSFEED will indicate, we've had more than enough BEAR NEWS for a while now. Perhaps, like the bears, we're only just now waking up. Stay woke, BEAR people. Go out and capture your own spirit bear (in a hypothetical and not literal sense, of course).

Spirit bear (Ursus americanus kermodei), a sub-species of the American black bear with unique cream-colored or white coats. While visually similar to the polar bear, spirit, or kermode, bears are not related to these fellow bears. While not all spirit bears are cream-colored, 1/10 of the population is, thanks to a unique double recessive gene in the species. The official provincial mammal of the Canadian province of British Columbia, the spirit bear is a prominent feature among the oral spiritual traditions of the indigenous tribes of its region. The lighter color of a spirit bear lends it a special fish-catching ability that its black bear relatives do not share.
food: Spirit bears catch fish, such as salmon, in the rivers and streams of the region, and also consume young shoots and tree buds and bees, yellow jackets ants and
carrion killed by winter weather. They also are known to enjoy honey.
habitat: The spirit bear is primarily found in the coastal portions of British Columbia, with a small number of other bears living near the southern Alaskan coast, as well as on Princess Island and Prince Royal Island. Gribbel Island contains the largest concentration of the white iteration of the spirit bear.
