Avalon City Saints - A Serialised Novel
Something new is coming...
Here’s the thing.
I have a half-finished novel, sitting on my hard drive, called Avalon City Saints. I was in the middle of writing it, prior to being asked to write what ended up being Rose Coloured Crosshairs for Obverse Books. My attention was therefore diverted and the rest is history.
You can buy that book here if you have still not yet secured your copy.
Avalon City Saints is a new thing. It is not tangentially connected to anyone else’s IP. It is an entirely original piece, with new characters, new situations and a new setting. It is its own completely self-contained thing.
I want to finish this book, and I would like people to read it as soon as is humanly possible. Writing 100,000 words on spec and then pitching it to a publisher or an agent is an option. But I thought I might try something more immediate.
The plan is to serialise the whole book, right here, on The Hypolloi! If serialisation was good enough for Victor Hugo or Charles Dickens or George Eliot, then it is good enough for me!
The lowest price point that Substack allow is £5 a month. What I am suggesting is that every two weeks, on every other Friday, paid subscribers will get the next chapter of the book. The length of the chapters will average around 2,500 words. Sometimes a little longer. Sometimes a little shorter. That is two chapters per month, meaning that paid subscribers will be paying around a penny per word.
But that’s not all, because each chapter will also include a completely exclusive illustration to go with it!
Paying for a year up front, will be £50, meaning that you get two months for free.
If you do not want to upgrade to the paid tier, then that is absolutely fine. The Hypolloi will continue with its free content as usual. Born on The Fourth World will still be here every month. On alternate weeks, other bits of free fiction and gratis art will appear as they have always done so.
Publishing Avalon City Saints in this way should give it a unique flavour. I am not going to be able to go back and fix things as I go, as I fly by the seat of my pants. I imagine it will be something like the difference between watching a live music performance and listening to a completed studio album. Or something.
Next week will be more Born on The Fourth World. The week after that will be a free prologue to Avalon City Saints where all subscribers can try before they buy.
Thank you for your continued support. Spread the word - Join The Hypolloi!
