Weekly Report - 16JUL2023
I've just returned from a long week at the beach in North Carolina, and am slowly reintegrating into life and rhythms at home. Here are a few fun things I've enjoyed over the last week while traveling-- I should note, none of these are referral links and obviously aren't sponsored, just sharing what I dug.
- ⌨️Keychron K7 - I wanted to travel super light for the beach this week, so rather than bringing my big MacBook, I just brought an iPad, iPhone, Fuji X100v, and this slim travel keyboard from Keychron. I'm a big big fan of their keyboards (this is my 3rd, I think?). It's very tiny, can connect with up to 3 devices via Bluetooth, as well as any device over USB-C, has a very satisfying clickiness with the Gateron Blue switches I chose, and has optional fun LED lighting effects when you type if you're into that kind of thing (I admit that I very much am.)
- ⚖️Renpho Travel Scale - I've been on a big health kick of late and wanted to make sure that my eating while on vacation didn't totally throw me off my health goals, so I looked into travel scales. I was very pleased with this super tiny, lightweight, Bluetooth-enabled scale. Worked great, very easy to slip into a pocket in my roller bag, and loved the Apple Health integration. Best of all, it was only $25, so if for some reason I didn't have room in my bag to bring it back or I forgot it somewhere, it wouldn't have been a complete gut punch.
- ⚖️Happy Scale - In tandem with the travel scale, I've been using Happy Scale for the past few months and found it to be a really delightful little indie app. Happy Scale lets you get a lot more data out of your daily (or whatever frequency) weigh-ins, by showing you the long term and short term trends that ultimately matter much more than what the scale says on any given day. Whether you're trying to lose, sustain, or gain weight, this app does a great job of letting you get the holistic picture and makes it harder to freak out over the seemingly arbitrary nature of how our bodies retain weight from day to day.
- 👟The mathematically correct way to tie your shoes - My good buddy, Vinny, sent me this link this week, knowing that it would be right up my alley. The title speaks for itself, but I particularly like that it's not dogmatic in which side you start with. Never stoop to re-tie your laces again! Big help for some of the runs that I did long the beach this week.
- 🎣 Ridiculous Fishing EX - Some of you may remember the cult iOS gaming classic, Ridiculous Fishing. It's been remastered and released with new content for free for Apple Arcade subscribers. My whole family has been obsessed with it this week during our long car and plane rides to and from the beach. A great game for when you have 2 minutes and want to play something fun, but also one of those dangerous games where you'll keep wanting to do "just one more." It's lots of fun on the iPhone but I think it is best played on an iPad with a big screen to soak up all the great details.
- ♟️Learn Chess with Dr. Wolf - I grabbed this on a whim and was really impressed with it. Made by Chess.com, this app lets you play against the titular Dr. Wolf, who gives you useful coaching appropriate to your skill level as you play. I've learned a lot in just the handful of games I've gotten to play with him.
- 🎒Evergoods CPL 24 - This was the backpack I used for the trip. Man, I love this bag. Evergoods just makes delightful products, with great attention to detail, out of this world materials, and quality craftsmanship. It's up there with the Peak Design Everyday Bag for my all time favorite backpacks in terms of comfort and organization. Two very different bags with different purposes for me, but I love them both.
Thanks for having a read! I just started getting my first email subscribers to my weekly notes newsletter this last week-- I'm thinking of doing a give away to thank my first couple of dozen subscribers. More details forthcoming, however, if you'd like to get these weekly notes in your inbox each week rather than having to trudge over to my blog whenever you think of doing it, you can sign up here.
