Sim Racing included in Global Esports Games
The Global Esports Games (GEG) 2024 is set to be the first to include sim racing thanks to the addition of Assetto Corsa Competizione.
GEG is an annual event organised by the Global Esports Federation. Member nations compete across a handful of esports titles (such as Dota 2, eFootball, Street Fighter) earning medals towards their nations total. 2024 is set to be the forth running of the event, this time hosted in China at the end of the year, after previous events in Singapore, Instanbul, and Ryiadh.
Assetto Corsa Competizione (ACC) is a racing simulator available on PC, Playstation 5/4, and Xbox One/X/S with a particular focus on GT3 racing. The ACC competition will indeed use GT3 cars across two divisions; Open and Woman. Specific details on the event structure are not yet available.
NZ Esports, New Zealands governing body for all esports, as a member of the Global Esports Federation is able to select New Zealand’s representatives for the GEG. They’ve recently announced the qualification process to find New Zealands sim racing representative. A 3 stage process, unsurprisingly on ACC on PC, it’s open to all kiwis and will see drivers tackling an initial time trial, sprint race, and enduro. The top male and top female drivers will become official E Blacks (New Zealands esports team) and get a fully funded trip to the December 2024 GEG to compete against the worlds best sim racers. While this is the first time we’ll see sim racing at the GEG it’s not the first time GEG will feature kiwis/the E Blacks. In 2023 Josh “JMKKing” King and the NZ womans Dota 2 team traveled to Ryiadh, Saudi Arabia where they competed in eFootball and Dota 2 respectively (learn more). For the 2022 GEG in Istanbul we had kiwis competing in Dota 2 and Street Fighter with Reagan “GhostChips” Kelly taking home the bronze medal for the Street Fighter competition (tweet).
GEG is just one of many events where NZ Esports has facilitated and funded kiwis competing in global esports competitions. Also in 2023 Josh “JMKKing” King and Chris “MysteriousRiver” Hu competed in the World Esports Championship in Romania for eFootball and Tekken 7. (learn more)
Joining New Zealands sim racing representatives at the GEG esports games 2024 will be the NZ Dota 2 Open team. They managed to tople team Australia (highlights) to make it through Oceanias qualifiers while the Womans team unfortunately came up short. Other esports titles or qualifying events have not been announced.
