It was Australian Paul Kandanoleon (Noodles) who led the way in this brand new format from Mega Esports, taking 1 pole and 4 race wins for a prize total of $430. Matthew Allen (Rangeraus) made it a clean sweep for Australia as he claimed the remaining 2 race wins along with 2 further podiums to take home $300.
It all went down on Saturday Nov 9th when new organisation on the block, Mega Esports, brought a new race format to their first ever Gran Turismo 7 sim racing event, the Mega GT7 Race Day. A reflection of what you’d expect to see from a traditional motorsport event the Mega Race Day featured 3 different race categories alternating race sessions at the Red Bull Ring.
With a $1,170 prize pool it was no surprise to see an extremely competitive field in all three categories. With small winning margins in all six races the on track action did not disappoint. And while the battles at the front were serious business it was great to see the drivers throughout the field enjoying the day and displaying the fair, friendly race attitude that the Mega Esports community continues to foster with no penalties being required across the entire day of racing.
A full day of racing with drivers split across three different categories can be a lot of juggle but Mega Esports pulled it off without a hitch. The day ran smoothly with hosts keeping drivers up to date and on schedule and recovering from issues quickly.
With the full day of racing broadcast on Twitch and Youtube the format also proved popular with fans drawing over 600 live views. The broadcast success was in no small part thanks to the great coverage by the commentary team of CrazyGoodKingFu, Trevor Byers, and Mike Howe.
Many were surprised to see Matthew McEwen (AE_McEwen) so regularly out paced throughout the day. Regarded as NZs number 1 GT7 driver he has been on a winning streak of late, picking up the win in the NZERS online season and in NZEAQ which will see him travel to China for the world finals. One of the few drivers to compete in all three race categories there was plenty of expectation going into the Mega Race Day. Perhaps his focus wasn’t there as he could only manage 5th in the opening race of the day before improving to claim 3 second places and a prize total of $210 by the end.
Simon Bishop (Sidawg) was another kiwi taking the fight to the Aussies but didn’t quite have the pace to deny the extraordinary speed of the Australian combo of Paul (Noodles) and Matthew (Rangeraus). Simon finished the day with 3 podiums across TCR and Open Gr.3.
Another top driver Aydan Matthews (CaptainRisky) opted to focus on a single race Category, Vintage Classic, and showed outstanding speed all day. He took home pole position in qualifying and was unlucky to finish 3rd in both the sprint and feature races having achieved the fastest race lap in each.
