Skateboarding in empty pools

Who thought skating in an empty pool was a good idea?

Today I learned this random fact and I am sure you will appreciate it.

We have always associated skating with empty pools, or at least when we think of Tony Hawk we think of him and california in the 70’s, empty pools and lots of people trying random tricks with their boards. Even the modern skateparks are designed like an empty pool, but and old empty pool not those modern ones with fancy flooring and fountains.

So today I stumbled on a story explaining why skating became popular in empty pools and I have the answer for you right here.

In 1976 the state of California experienced one of the worst droughts it has ever seen (I guess you already know where this is going). This drought went all the way into 1977 and was responsible for the most driest years in the history of said state.

In an effort to preserve water, private and public swimming pools were being emptied and some emerging skaters started jumping fences and skating the empty pools, the most notorious one being Steve Alba.

Steve Alba is considered by many as the creator of “Pool Skating”, some even referring to him as the “Godfather of Pool Skating”. Steve was a mastermind when it came to finding pools, cleaning them and shredding them until the owners of the cops came.

In an interview, Tony Hawk one of, if not the most famous skater in the world, recognized Steve’s dedication to the sport, he told the reporter that he had it easy by growing up with skateparks, but Steve came from the true empty pools era, jumping fences and draining pools.

So there you have it, maybe just maybe if the 1970’s drought in California hadn’t happened we would be missing on pool skating.

This one was pretty short, so maybe I’ll give you another one.
