HTHRFLWRS #7 - Ash Cloud

THE VOLCANO ERUPTS. THE ASH COVERS THE SEA. ALL SHALL BURN

Hey, y’all! I’ve been hard at work recently putting together the second area in FISH FEAR ME… Shipwreck Bay!

Pixel art of a volcano blowing smoke.
Normal things happen here.

This area comes with:

  • Five new regions

  • One new weather condition (Ash Cloud)

  • 40-50ish new fish

  • A ton of weird opaque mechanics to discover

It’s still a work in progress, but I’m very happy so far with how it’s all coming together. There’s a region that’s chock full of valuable fish (but you get hurt every second you’re in it), and another one that’s completely empty unless you fulfill specific conditions. You thought you could fish here? Wrong, fucko! GHOST ATTACK!

This is my favorite part of developing FISH FEAR ME: the further you go into the game, the weirder and more opaque the puzzles get. There are tools at your disposal that can help you, but which ones is up to you to discover.

It also means that developing the game takes a good chunk longer than I’d like — I’m also working on several other projects which take short-term priority, so progress has been slow. Still, I’m very excited about the game, and I’m hoping to get this area out for playtesting soon!

SPEAKING OF PLAYTESTING: Since the reaction to the demo was so informative, I’ve been considering making a secret playtest branch available for subscribers to this newsletter, for testing out new content like this. If you’d be interested in this, let me know!

One last teaser screenshot for you:

A FISH FEAR ME screenshot featuring a new area (Abyssal Plain), new bounties (a red fish, a glowing fish, and a blue squid), and new baits (some kind of bell??)
Ignore the amount of knowledge in my inventory. I’m the dev so I’m allowed to cheat lol

That’s it for this week! Hope you’re all doing well.
