HTHRFLWRS #18 - Lasers and Feelings Hack Titled "Sex and The City"

Alright so basically your two stats are SEX (interpersonal connection) and THE CITY (getting shit done). You can figure out the rest of the joke from there

“The Newsletter for Heather Flowers”

Hey everybody! It’s me, Heather Flowers. You read the title of the newsletter? Cool. I’ve been watching a lot of Sex and the City recently for semi-gender reasons. I’m in the middle of Season 4 right now and it’s wild what they do to Miranda, right? Like, the A-plot will be “Carrie debates what it means to commit to someone after getting together with a guy who really likes jazz” and the D-plot will be some shit like “Miranda gets haunted by ghosts” or “Miranda eats out of the garbage.”1 Absurd!

Anyways, I’ve been playing with a lot of very goofy game ideas recently. After last newsletter’s conversation about zero-player games (which I got a lot of lovely emails about!!), I threw one together in a couple hours, called SISYPHUSES.

A guy walks off a cliff and falls like a looney tune over and over. Every time he does, a pillar of boulders gets higher and higher, giving him incrementally better chances of reaching the other side.
Every time he falls in the hole, he gets a +1% chance to successfully move another step in that particular location. I’ve run the simulations and it’ll take about two hours for them to reach the other side at one second per step. Delightful!

Had a lot of fun making this! Maybe I’ll make a few more and put together a collection. Unfortunately a collection can only have one game that sucks like this, so the rest of em would have to actually be good, instead of just funny.

In terms of games-that-might-actually-come-out, I’m moving forward with a new game which does unfortunately have a player. It’s sort of a sequel to Unfair Flips, but instead of flipping a coin you’re getting stabbed repeatedly by a giant machine. “What kind of machine,” you ask? Well, I’ll tell you: knife machine. More details to come!2

Question of the Week: What’s the weirdest knife you’ve personally beheld?

Best,
Heather

P.S. I got to play a game of Raccoon Sky Pirates last night and had a blast! I’m still kind of bewildered by the skill roll system, and not entirely certain we played it correctly, but the way we did play it was a ton of fun.

  1. Two actual plotlines!!!!! And not even the worst stuff to happen to her THIS SEASON! ↩

  2. Ok one more detail. The reason I’m doing something in the vein of Unfair Flips (though admittedly very different, given the knife machine) is because I’m climbing a mountain in figuring out how to make and release a full game while fatigued, and therefore trying to make the mountain as climbable as possible by scoping it as small as I can. Given that UF was my smallest game to date, it feels like a good idea to make something substantially larger but still constrained by a similar set of principles. ↩
