Busy doesn’t always mean moving forward
I learned this the uncomfortable way.
The difference between being busy and actually moving forward
Hey Friend 👋,
There was a period where I was busy every single day.
My to-do list was full.
I was replying, planning, organizing, researching.
I ended most days tired.
But when I looked back at the week… nothing had really moved.
That’s when I realized something uncomfortable:
Busy and progress are not the same thing.
Busy feels productive because you’re doing things.
Progress feels uncomfortable because you’re advancing something.
And those are different experiences.
Here’s what I started noticing.
Busy tasks usually:
are easy to start
don’t require much emotional risk
make you feel in control
keep you in preparation mode
Progress tasks usually:
feel slightly uncomfortable
involve being seen or evaluated
move something from “idea” to “real”
can actually fail
For example:
Researching for hours feels productive.
Publishing the thing feels risky.
Organizing your workspace feels productive.
Sending the proposal moves the needle.
Planning content feels productive.
Hitting publish is progress.
One makes you feel safe.
The other makes you grow.
Now when I look at my day, I ask one simple question:
“Did I move something forward, or did I just manage things?”
Managing keeps life stable.
Moving forward changes your position.
Both matter.
But they’re not equal.
If you’ve been feeling tired but not satisfied lately,
you might not need more discipline.
You might just need one real progress task per day.
Not ten.
Just one.
That’s enough to change momentum.
Till next time,
Susan 🌱
