GoodStuffNW: Springing Into Action

Whew!

With our democracy under attack on a daily, or even hourly basis, billionaires illegally gutting government agencies willy-nilly with no one willing to hold them to account, and the economy sliding off a cliff, it's been hard to focus on anything more than putting one foot in front of the other.

I hope some of you are planning on using your voices in tomorrow’s “Hands Off!” rallies around the country to let our elected officials and those billionaires know that tearing apart our country and leaving us—and especially our less fortunate neighbors—poorer and hungrier as a nation is not the future we want. Other ways to get involved are: checking Indivisible Oregon for upcoming events; joining the Sister District Project to do voter outreach; by attending your representatives’ Town Halls; and especially by calling your elected officials and letting them know what you expect of them.

In Oregon, you can telephone our Congressional delegation by calling the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 where they will connect you to your members of Congress, or call them directly in their DC offices:

Senator Ron Wyden - (202) 224-5244
Rep. Janelle Bynum - (202) 225-5711
Rep. Cliff Bentz - (202) 225-6730
Rep. Val Hoyle - (202) 225-6416
Rep. Andrea Salinas - (202) 225-5643
Rep. Maxine Dexter, M.D. - (202) 225-4811
Rep. Suzanne Bonamici - (202) 225-0855

Right here at home it’s almost halfway through the 2025 Legislative Session in Salem, and there are quick actions you can take to support our local food system. Read about the bills in the latest Legislative Report and click on the quick Take Action links to let your legislator know you value Oregon’s local farmers, farmers’ markets and the clean water and air we all share.

Studies show that getting out in nature is a great way to improve your mood, and Silas, my Cardigan Corgi, makes sure I do that every day without fail. While we were out walking through the neighborhood the other day I spotted a half dozen edible plants springing up in scraggly parking strips and popping out of cracks in the sidewalk. See what I found and glance around the next time you’re out and about. You might be surprised!

Regular readers will know that my husband Dave relentlessly trolls baking websites, blogs and videos for ideas that he tries out on his willing victims, aka his family, and regularly hands out samples to friends, neighbors and postal carriers alike. After months of testing, he’s finally satisfied enough with his latest effort to let me post about these Orange Cinnamon Filled Scones. See what you think of them!

I hope you have a beautiful and hopeful spring. Thanks as always, for reading and for your support!

Best,

Kathleen Bauer
