Generic Games New Year 2026 News

Hello everyone, and happy new year!

I figured this was a good time for a newsletter, to let you know what I've been up to and what's coming soon.

Generic Games achievements in 2025:

  • We released the Hunter's Journal and Slayer's Survival Kit for Monster of the Week. The Mystic Marginalia (stretch goal extras) is almost ready so expect that soon.
  • I opened a playtest for Glorious, my game of Napoleonic naval adventure (to play in the style of Aubrey and Maturin/"Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World" and Hornblower). If you're interested in joining that playtest, drop me an email and I'll send you the material.
  • I attended three cons, all in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Kapcon (Wellington) in January, then Convergence (Hamilton) and Roll for Hope (Wellington) in September. All great experiences, I recommend them if you're nearby in the future.

Generic Games plans for 2026:

  • Move Glorious along. Hopefully to release, but how close that is depends on playtest feedback. Also working on two alternate settings for the game (one fantasy one, one military SF).
  • Revise the Xenogate Expedition 13 mini preview edition. The rules are updated, I just need to get the text done. Expect this relatively soon.
  • We (myself, Marek, and Luke) are working on a SF/space horror book for Monster of the Week. It's probably a long way off, but slowly developing (gestating? evolving?).
  • I'm starting to think about a revision of the core Monster of the Week rules. Not sure if it'll be a full new edition or a supplement of optional updates, like John Harper did with Deep Cuts for Blades in the Dark. Either way, that'll be a long time in development.

My games of 2025:

This year, I played all these roleplaying games:

  • Yazeba's Bed & Breakfast
  • Deathmatch Island
  • Glorious (playtest)
  • Xenogate Expedition 13 (playtest)
  • The Zone
  • The Great Soul Train Robbery
  • DIE
  • Mythic Bastionland
  • Blade Runner
  • Stewpot
  • Monster of the Week
  • Kill Your Grandad
  • Maskwitches of Forgotten Doggerland
  • Outgunned Adventure
  • Prismatic (playtest)
  • Judge Dredd (the 80s one)
  • Mothership
  • Coriolis: The Great Dark
  • Alien

A pretty decent selection! Stand outs were Yazeba's B&B, Deathmatch Island, Mythic Bastionland, Blade Runner, Stewpot, and Alien (I like what they did with the new edition there). Some really fun playtests of Glorious, too.

In the "not an rpg but close stakes", it's worth checking out Vantage from Stonemaier Games. A board game where you crash land on a planet and from there you can just wander round and explore. Lots of story book entries, lots of cards, pretty fun.

Anyway, hope you all have a good 2026!

Cheers
Michael
