1944 is all about being on the other side of WWII. Everyone but Hitler knew the Germans were going to lose by this point and the Japanese were quickly running out of gas (literal gasoline, to power the machines of war), so things weren’t looking great for them either.

So 1944 is all about people dying to fight fascism and imperialism. Not great, but it certainly feels better than 1939.
