Hello, Fifth Maine Museum Community!

Art on the Porch is this Sunday, August 9th, from 10am - 3pm. Art on the Porch features over 30 artists with pop-up stores on the beautiful porch of the Fifth Maine, overlooking our seaside garden and Whitehead Passage. They'll be selling a wide variety of unique, handmade items including jewelry, paintings, art glass, pottery, photographs, pillows, note cards, baskets, ceramic tiles, driftwood trees, botanical soaps and shampoos, and candles, just to name a few. We will also have a cookout on the front lawn serving burgers, hotdogs, and vegetarian options from 11am-2pm. We can always use volunteers to help with the cookout. Please email [email protected] if interested in volunteering.

RSVP for our Annual Membership Meeting Thursday August 13

This is a reminder that our Annual Membership Meeting is August 13 from 5:30PM to 8PM. Please RSVP here!

Our speaker will be Susan Hanley. Susan is the guest curator for our new exhibit, Abandon Ship! Mishaps and Maydays on Casco Bay, all about the history of Maine shipwrecks from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. For her talk at the Annual Membership Meeting, Susan will be sharing fascinating details that couldn’t make it into the exhibit. We hope to see you there! Membership Survey

This is a reminder that if you haven’t yet done so, please take a minute to answer our Membership Survey, whether you are a current or former member. This survey is an opportunity for you to share your feedback with us. We would like to know what is important to our members, past and present, and how we can better serve the community that supports us. Your feedback would truly mean a lot.

John Brown’s Body

We are thrilled to have artist Eli Neuman-Hammond’s sound sculpture on view at the Fifth Maine for the month of August. It is a cradle-shaped music box that plays an arrangement of the melody of the civil war song John Brown’s Body. It plays this song using a motorized music box movement that takes punched paper, much like a player piano.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our concert last Friday where Eli performed his new composition for synthesizer, also inspired by the melody for the song John Brown’s Body. Peaks Island musician Auntie Opiate and Portland duo tang also performed during Friday’s concert.
