February: nature is a natural media cleanse

Minnesota friends, we had quite a January — a month like no other, characterized by rollercoaster weather and hair-raising, history-making news. Thus, for February, we’re offering a lighter, gentler newsletter to help cleanse and calm your media stream palate. We encourage you to walk the trails and breathe deeply!
We’ll be back in March with science and nature news and photos from Frontenac State Park. For now, Mabel and friends, take care of yourselves and each other! The days are getting longer, and spring is nigh.
One tidbit of February news: CandleNight Walk is postponed
We had to postpone our Jan. 31 CandleNight walk because of precariously icy trail conditions. Instead, we’ll hold it from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28. Come walk amid cande-lit luminaries and under the moon and stars, and stop by the main picnic shelter to enjoy a bonfire, hot cocoa, s’mores and other treats, and a show of the 2025’s photographs on iNaturalist, courtesy of your Frontenac State Park Association.

“February Twilight”
By Sara Teasdale (1884-1933, American)
I stood beside a hill
Smooth with new-laid snow,
A single star looked out
From the cold evening glow.
There was no other creature
That saw what I could see —
I stood and watched the evening star
As long as it watched me.
