Cultivating your English #5: Rome wasn’t built in a day
♥️“You either get the result that you wanted or the lesson that you needed”♥️ James Wedmore
Today’s newsletter is a little reminder that effective communication in English is an infinite game.
Here’s Simon Sinek’s definition of an infinite game: “In infinite games, like business or politics or life itself, the players come and go, the rules are changeable, and there is no defined endpoint. There are no winners or losers in an infinite game; there is only ahead and behind.”
And here is his definition of a finite game: “In finite games, like football or chess, the players are known, the rules are fixed, and the endpoint is clear. The winners and losers are easily identified.”

Take a look at this video (it has subtitles if you want): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UY-1-9ObaLE When Simon talks about business just substitute the word “business” for “improving your English”. It’s absolutely relevant to your learning process!
Some of my students are overly anxious to improve their English quickly: it’s easy to get disappointed that you are not getting the results you want straight away.
Be kind to yourself and focus on the progress you are making: Rome wasn’t built in a day! https://lyricstraining.com/play/morcheeba/rome-wasnt-built-in-a-day/HmUHg21QEm
If you normally watch tv series and films in the original version then well done- that’s fantastic! If you don’t, why don’t you try watching one of your favourite films in English?
Please press reply and tell me about your thoughts regarding infinite games and learning.
Remember to continue playing quiz your English, freerice, listening to songs on Lyrics training or anything else that will help you with your English AND that you enjoy doing!
