Welcome to Enclosure Academy's Book Club
Good afternoon readers,
I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.
In Los Angeles, it rained. At first I walked around announcing I loved the rain, until I noticed a puddle beneath the window next to the bed. Another smaller puddle pooled in the living room. Using twine, tupperware, thumbtacks, and ribbon, I spent time inventing makeshift catchers for the droplets. I’ll include a photo below.
Of course I am writing to you to check in, and share some thoughts on Amina Cain’s Indelicacy. If you have not yet purchased a copy, do not worry. You have plenty of time to read the book before our Zoom meeting, which I’d like to schedule for Saturday the 26th, at 10:00 AM PST. Please reply to this email if this time doesn’t work for you.
While re-reading Indelicacy, my attention was drawn to different aspects of Cain’s craft. Themes I’ve been mulling over are the presence of animals and plants in the novel, and the role they play in Vitória’s self-perception, her feelings around female relationships, how Cain portrays domestic partnership, and the role of writing in maintaining Vitória’s identity.
What is coming to light for you?
For the meeting on the 26th, I would love to include discussion questions written by members of the group. We have time, so allow yourself to ponder and formulate a question or two. Send those over once you feel ready to share.
I will email again before our meeting.
I am so glad you are here.
