A.R. Penck 5-Hour Special:
A.R. Penck was primarily known as an East German neo-expressionist painter whose work featured thick-lined stick figures and subversive political themes. But he moonlighted as a free jazz drummer and pianist with the European-based improvising outfit TTT, issuing scores of private press recordings on LP and CD adorned with his own artwork. TTT most often included Penck along with the Wollny brothers Frank and Heinz on guitar and bass, and was augmented with a rotating cast of some of the best free players of the 80s-90s including Frank Wright, Butch Morris, Peter Kowald, Billy Bang, Denis Charles, Jeanne Lee, William Parker, Frank Lowe, Louis Moholo and more. On today's Long Rally we'll be taking a deep dive into Penck's musical oeuvre with a wall-to-wall 5-hours of TTT and related works from Penck's discography.
