Settle in as Doug Schulkind presents the second installment of the historic, five-hour John Coltrane documentary, "Tell Me How Long Trane's Been Gone." Part 2 investigates the science and spirituality of Coltrane's improvising and composing. Learn his motivations from transitioning from playing standard chord progressions into embracing first a model style, then a more spiritual grounding. Interviews with modal theorist George Russell, and Coltrane scholar Andrew White are featured. Hear John Coltrane himself speak about getting to "the best good" he can get to on his horn and as a man. Also hear the earliest known taped interview with Coltrane as he speaks about religion. Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Steve Lacy, Sonny Fortune, Cornel West and Amiri Baraka are also a significant part of this section of the documentary. Remember to tune in at 11am to hear it live as this program will not be archived.
