Mix Annotations - Why is it still this day?

Hi Friends!

Happy Giving Tuesday. If you're like me, then your inbox has been filling up over the past week with emails from non-profits trying to get donations. This is different in that at least this ask comes with a mix.

I've had a Canada Helps fundraising page every year for about 8 years now. It started as just a spot for my family to donate instead of getting me Christmas presents, but for a while now it's been an all year affair that's shared with anybody who wants to donate. Together we've raised just about $28,000, which is not nothing. (To paraphrase Drunk Dad Advice, "$28,000 is $28,000.")

The Draiser 2023 campaign blew past this year's goal, so I've set a new goal of $3023, and I think we're on track to make it. Sitting at $2844 right now. I'd of course appreciate if you donated or shared the link.

Being a part of something can be more fun than just seeing that it's happening. Like the John Mulaney joke, do you want to just see that there's a fundraiser, or would you like to know you've contributed? Last week Peter gave me two $50 bills to add to the pile.

I should clarify, though, that observation is participation as well in some settings.

Anyways, here’s the link to the latest mix: soundcloud.com/draiser2023/why-is-it-still-this-day

ANNOTATIONS

Be Your Own Pet - Worship the Whip I was opening cd packages at CFRU with another volunteer. When we got to the one for PYOP's first album, she said "Look! You can wear a Be Your Own Pet pin and be just like Thurston Moore!" I did not know who Thurston Moore was at the time, but I got the impression that I should not want to be.

Sluice - Agit comme du monde Exclaim had a post for this and for a new Luge song, and I was like, "Luge? Sluice? What's up with these names?!"

Spoons - Arias & Symphonies Nominated for the Polaris Heritage Prize! I knew "Nova Heart," but not this classic.

Deerhoof - Sit Down, Let Me Tell You a Story Close personal friends.

Spectrum - How You Satisfy Me I have no idea, sorry. It was saved in my Shazam from something.

Anjimile - The King Close personal friend.

Spoon - Who Makes Your Money Close personal friends.

Rachel Sweet - It's So Different Here I think this was a Spotify playlist of some kind.

Mack Rice - Dy-No-Mite (Did You Say My Love) From the compilation Written In Their Soul: The Stax Songwriter Demos. It's a pretty fun album, especially if you like listening to exactly 146 songs!

Nicholas Krgovich - Cup Full Close personal friend.

Felbm - Filatelie I think this was a Spotify playlist, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was on Instagram.

Group Listening - A Little Lost Definitely a Spotify playlist. My favourite version of the song is Nat Baldwin's cover, which I know is probably a bit heretical.

Connie Francis - It Would Still Be Worth It This song is in the documentary Forbidden Love: The Unashamed Stories of Lesbian Lives, which I also pulled from for a track for a previous playlist.

Mitski - My Love Mine All Mine Close personal friend.

Tirzah - Their Love Close personal friend.

Hania Rani - Mountains I think close personal friend, but ironically maybe also reinforced by Bled? She played Massey Hall this month, but it was sold out, on a school night, and there wasn't even seating.

Christopher Bear, Daniel Rossen - See You From the soundtrack for Past Lives. I enjoyed the movie. It was very nice to look at and it taps into that tempting "what if" pit of yearning some of us have for our exes, but it is important to recognize that all of the characters are big wieners.

Kid Koala - Til We Meet Again Close personal friend.

While space allows, I’m stashing my recent mixes and annotations in a Google Drive folder, which you can visit here: The Archive

As always, here's the link to this year's fundraiser. The goal is a modest $3023, but I will increase it if we go over. It would mean a lot to me if you considered donating: tinyurl.com/Draiser2023.

Even if you’ve already donated, please consider sharing it with your friends and family.
