Mix Annotations - Vaccine Orgy
Hi Friends,
Many years ago there used to be a website called Boner Party. It was like a tumblr or something where this guy would post different celebs, musicians, or people from the internet, and he'd explain why someone was or was not invited to the Boner Party. Often it was just hot girls, but sometimes it'd be someone who did something really cool or just, like, Don Draper. The captions and explanations were funny enough to keep me entertained at 18-19 years old, which I know isn't setting a high bar.
Over the past few months I kept hearing songs that I'd forgotten about (like the first 2 tracks in this mix, or even something like "Gangnam Style") and my first thought would be "Oh, this is definitely getting played at the Vaccine Orgy." (This being the orgy that I'll host when we're all vaccinated and allowed to touch each other again.) To be clear, I don't think that this is good orgy music. It's all a little sexless to my ears. But I like "Vaccine Orgy" as a metric. Hopefully it ages better than Boner Party did.

ANNOTATIONS
Dr. Lee Pulos - Adventures in Learning: Control Stress, Self-Hypnosis (1983) I just did some googling for this one. I was hoping to find some vintage audio from, like, self-help cassettes or something, and this really delivered. You'll hear more of it at the end. I don't know if the tape actually works or not.
Fatboy Slim - Praise You Close personal friend.
Elvis Presley - A Little Less Conversation (JXL Radio Edit) Close personal friend. Although, I couldn't name another JXL song if my life depended on it. Sorry to JXL if you're reading this. I love all my subscribers.
Paul Williams - Number One This song and "Euroleague" were both used on James Acaster's latest comedy special, Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999. I probably wouldn't have noticed the song except that it prominently talks about the former NBA-player, and Toronto's own, Anthony Bennett. It's a nice song-writing trick on Paul's part to use a name I'm familiar with, and then put it to a melody. Definitely makes it easier to remember. It's similar to how I still have this Brita ad stuck in my head after 3 years.
Girlhood - Fever Sweat I think this was a Bandcamp recommendation of some kind, either like on Bandcamp Weekly or someone I follow on Bandcamp bought it.
Ramasandiran Somusundaram - Electronic Heart This track is on a compilation called Magik Cyrkles which was curated by this group called Psychemagik. I was somehow linked to the Magik Sunrise comp, which mentioned that they'd previously put together Magik Cyrkles, so I went back to listen to the original project and this was the one song that really popped for me.
Some Time Alone, Alone - Melody's Echo Chamber Close personal friends, as far as I can tell.
The Luyas - The Quiet Way I unearthed this song during my long process of organizing my music hard drives. I'm not sure why this Luyas album was buried in the archive but their other two were still in the "main feed." They all sound pretty similar.
Open Mike Eagle - WTF if Self Care This is from Open Mike Eagle's latest album, Anime, Trauma and Divorce. I feel like I need to be clear that I don't get most of the anime references on the album. I don't want people to start thinking they can talk to me about anime. You can't.
John Carroll Kirby - Wind This track was on a Deep Listening Spotify playlist that Lis was listening to. I was surprised, since the album cover doesn't really convey someone I'd connect with. That said, please let me know if I'm wrong and if that image is 100% the vibe I give off.
Paul Williams - Euroleague Please see above.
Alice Coltrane - Spiritual Eternal Close personal friend.
Elfin Saddle - Hammer Song Another gem from the hard drive. This was a big hit back in my community radio days, and it's a song I think about often. RIP.
Monophonics - It's Only Us I don't know where I heard this one from. It was probably linked on Twitter or Instagram. I was doing a really good job tracking where I was hearing songs from, but then I just stopped. Sorry.
Jaime & Nair - Anjo Samuel Arcanjo I know for sure this was shared on IG.
The Zombies - This Will Be Our Year Close personal friends. I do not believe in any sense that 2021 "will be our year," but other parts of this song were stuck in my head recently.
Serafina Steer - Drinking While Driving I think this was also shared on IG, but it would've been many many months ago. No way of knowing.
Parenthetical Girls - The Comedienne More from my hard drive archeology, this is from the 5th EP in the Parenthetical Girls' Privilege series. Tooling around those EPs, I was surprised at how many hits are on them and also surprised that I'd forgotten most of them.
Isobel Waller-Bridge - September I was turned on to this track from listening to Isobel's interview on the Soundtracking podcast. Isobel is Phoebe's sister, which therefore means I've heard some of Isobel's work on Phoebe's work. This piano track is giving off strong Michael Nyman vibes, which is nothing but catnip for a Nymaniac like me.
Dr. Lee Pulos - Adventures in Learning: Control Stress, Self-Hypnosis (1983) Please see above.
While space allows, I’m stashing my recent mixes and annotations in a Google Drive folder, which you can visit here: The Archive
DRAISER 2021
This year I'm looking to raise $3000 for local orgs. My personal goal is to get 5 friends to help me with this very low-effort, passive campaign. So far there's only one. Please let me know if you'd like to help, or you can donate here: tinyurl.com/Draiser2021. Even if you’ve already donated, please consider sharing it with your friends and family.
