Mix Annotations - The Greater Relief
Hi Friends!
The title for this mix is from Accented Cinema’s video, How to Swear in Chinese | April Fools' Essay.

They say that “The Greater Relief” is a euphemism for pooping. I think most people understand why I’ve included this, and why I've included what I’ve included as the intro to this mix.
This past Wednesday was National Canadian Film Day, which I participated in by attending a screening of The Art of Woo (2001). Like a lot of Canadian things right now (politicians, companies, etc.), the people behind National Canadian Film Day were insistent that by watching a Canadian film we were
a) doing our civic duty, and
b) standing up for Canada.
Honestly, and I say this as someone who loves watching Canadian movies, that’s very strange behaviour. Not to go on a rant about it, but your civic duty is to do things like vote, pay taxes, and put your bins out on the right days. Barring actual war, we defend Canada by defining our shared values and then strengthening them. As an example, people forever talk about free heathcare as something that’s great about Canada. If enough of us agree on that, then we defend Canada by making free healthcare truly universal, with things like the national dental plan, pharmacare, and ending privatization. It’s our politicians and our bosses who need to hear that, so they can do their part in strengthening and defending Canada. And corporations need to pay more taxes. Seeing a free screening of an obscure and not-very-good movie from 24 years ago is not doing your civic duty. It’s a fun night at the cinema, but that’s kind of it.
But going back to things I like, I’ve had “She Farted So Hard, She Died” stuck in my head for 3 days now. Sadly, while the lyrics are written by a person, the music is A.I. generated. I’m still coping with this information.
Anyways, here’s the link to the latest mix:
ANNOTATIONS
Post 10 - Unclogging Disgusting Beaver Dam Made With Moose Poop After watching enough Drain Cleaning Australia and The Drain Unblockers, it made sense that YouTube would eventually show me Post 10’s videos unclogging culverts along country roads. Very inspiring stuff.
Ecca Vandal - Cruising to Self Soothe This got shared on IG. On YouTube, it’s so funny seeing how many of the top comments to this video are from guys being like “I’m 40+ and this song rocks!”
PYPY - I Am A Simulation Close personal friends.
Being Dead - Godzilla Rises They were on a bunch of 2024 year end lists, I think, and the weather’s getting to be just so that I’m open to this kind of music. Fits right alongside bands like The Shivas, Cousins, or Harlem, who were huge for me in the summers of the early 2010s.
Talking Heads - Wild Wild Life Close personal friends.
Kelly Marie - Feels Like I'm In Love This is in S01E01 of It’s A Sin, an okay but not especially good show about the AIDS Crisis in the UK.
The Droids - La Fuerza I have no idea. Sorry.
The Cleaners from Venus - Marilyn on a Train Scott picked this Cleaners from Venus album as part of our February Music Month tradition, which I hadn’t revisited since Jason recommended them to me back in (checks email) 2014. Good stuff!
Glen Brown - Assack Lawn No. 1 Dub Version 1 I took a bit of a dive into reggae after watching the Sounds & Pressure: Reggae in a Foreign Land documentary on the NFB site. It’s 5 separate stories, so great to spread out over a week of lunch breaks. This song’s not in it, but after the doc and then listening to the Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast episode on Ras Trent, I really wanted to find some heavier dub.
Nana McLean - Till I Kiss You Just a lovely standout track that was in the Sounds & Pressure segment on Nana McLean.
Yasuaki Shimizu - Semi Tori No Hi Lis and I went to his show in Toronto. It was a lovely performance, but sadly couldn’t stay until the end because we had to get all the way back to the east end to walk the dog.
Ferkat Al Ard - Matar Al Sabah This was a pick of mine during February Music Month. It’s a song that I feel would fit easily alongside Jens Lekman, or on a Wes Anderson soundtrack. Sorry if that offends anyone…
Gal Costa - Baby Scott picked Tropicalia ou Panis et Circencis during February Music Month, which features this song.
Leonard Cohen - The Smokey Life Trackstar have been letting Hamilton Leithauser guest host a few episodes with friends, and this song came up on his one with Rostam Batmanglij.
Smerz - You Got Time and I Got Money I think I just heard of this as part of it’s media cycle for being a new single.
Alan Hawkshaw - Eternity This was one of the tracks featured on Bandsplaining’s How An Obscure 70s Genre Has DEFINED Modern Music. I would say that I generally don’t like this video, but I do like this track.
The Strokes - I'll Try Anything Once (You Only Live Once demo) Close personal friends.
While space allows, I’m stashing my recent mixes and annotations in a Google Drive folder, which you can visit here: The Archive

As always, here's the link to this year's fundraiser. The goal is a modest $2025, but I will increase it if we go over. It would mean a lot to me if you considered donating: tinyurl.com/Draiser2025.
Even if you’ve already donated, please consider sharing it with your friends and family.
