Mix Annotations - Quelle Bummeur

Hi Friends,

There's a celebrity out there who reminds me so much of an ex-girlfriend (the very same ex-girlfriend who recently unsubscribed from this newsletter), that I've started having dreams where my ex and the celebrity are interchangeable.

It's a photo of a lego man taking a photo of a tree that's kind of bent over.SendJust this week I dreamt that I'd received a package at my apartment for her new boyfriend, Andrew Whyte. (I'd never heard this name before in my life, but if you google "Andrew Whyte" you'll wind up with a bunch of pictures of a lego man being a tourist, taking pictures of ferris wheels, seasides, and even a bench.) I was living in a ground floor apartment that opened up onto a big shared green space with other apartments and townhomes. I shouted into the park area that the package had arrived, then turned back around inside my apartment, closed the sliding glass doors, and promptly forgot about letting Andrew Whyte in to receive the package. Instead, I got wrapped up in a story a former coworker was telling me about how he camped out Planet Earth-style to try and get the perfect photo of a water/forest elk.

It's a still of the forest spirit deer from Princess Mononoke, when it's standing in silhouette against the sun.Days later, in the dream, I ran into my ex while out and about, and we decided to drive back to my apartment in my maroon convertible so I could give her the package.

A picture of a maroon 1987 convertible mustang car.In my apartment were my two roommates, one being a friend I've lived with before in real life, and one being someone who I can't remember, so they're more of a fact of the dream than anything. My roommates invite my ex to come in and join us for dinner, but part way through she starts to have terrible stomach pains. The unknowable roommate takes her into one of the rooms to lay down, where she starts turning into a werewolf. My friend and I get scared and run to the car and drive off.

Hours later we come back, and driving up to our building we see that she's gone into the frat house across the street and murdered everybody, but now she's nowhere to be seen.

A couple nights later I dreamt my name was Brian Passé.

ANNOTATIONS

Four the Moment - Freedom Has Beckoned Four the Moment were one of the 2022 recipients of the Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize, for their 1987 album We're Still Standing. I had a heckuva time trying to find a place to stream it, but luckily it's on the "Museum of Canadian Music" website.

Bill Orcutt - At a Distance His album Music For Four Guitars wound up on a bunch of year end lists, but I think I gave it a try after seeing it on the Aquarium Drunkard list. It reminds me of this great Mary Halvorson album called Meltframe, and of course, Glenn Branca.

Deerhoof - Super Duper Rescue Heads! Close personal friends.

We Have Band - You Came Out Tough to say for sure. It feels like something I heard while diving into a bunch of 2000s indie dance music playlists. I wish I could be more specific.

Sharyn Rose - You Are Something Special Another upload from the Diana Chan McNally (Automaticamore) youtube page. In the description Diana says it's, "Not the greatest, but definitely catchy," but I think I like it a bit more than that.

Roger - I Want to Be Your Man I think this was on a Spotify playlist, but I don't know if it was a curated one that someone made, or just the algorithm.

Uilab - St. Elmo's Fire Speaking of which, the Spotify algorithm put this on a mix for me, and it couldn't be more up my alley! I think if I ever had a show again, this would be in the running for intro music. I've been thinking a bunch about intro music lately because the house band for Late Night is made up members from Les Savy Fav (and at one time Marnie Stern too), and I wonder, if I was ever invited to be on the show, would they let me request one of their songs as intro music?

Penguin Cafe - Penguin Cafe Single Close personal friends.

Nancy Wilson - (You Don't Know) How Glad I Am I think someone shared this on instagram.

Gordon Lightfoot - Sundown I don't know. I did hear it again in the background when I rewatched Knives Out, but I think it only registered because I'd heard people talking about it on a podcast. I thought it was Desert Island Discs, but that seems to not be true. Might've been CBB FM.

Shirley Hurt - Problem Child I heard about Shirley Hurt because they put out a record on Telephone Explosion, and I'm on the TE mailing list.

The Hidden Cameras - Dark End of the Street I think this album kind of passed me by when it came out, but I got turned on to the original of this song from an SNL sketch. And then I signed up for a music newsletter, and the first one I got ended up being about a different ex than the one from my dream, and it said she did a cover of the song, and so had The Hidden Cameras. So then I'm just back here with Joel.

Mary Lou Williams - The Devil Scott, Bled, and I made it through our third February of every day listening to a new classic album. Mary Lou Williams was one of Scott's picks.

Bradford Cox - Pastel Ruins Close personal friends.

Quelle Chris - Alive Ain't Always Living Close personal friends. It was not my intention to title this mix Quelle Bummeur and include a song by Quelle Chris, but the universe works like that sometimes.

Marina Allen - Getting Better This must've been a Spotify Weekly playlist.

Jake Xerxes Fussell - Love Farewell Another stumper. Surely from some mix, but I don't know where. Seems like one of those songs that I heard somewhere else, but then when it popped up on a Spotify Weekly or something it sounded familiar and grabbed my attention. Lord only knows.

While space allows, I’m stashing my recent mixes and annotations in a Google Drive folder, which you can visit here: The Archive
