ANNOTATIONS
Tomorrowland (2015) If my guy Brad is directing, you know I'm going #BirdWatching.
Luther Ingram - If It's All the Same To You Babe The instrumental version of this song, which is called "Exus Trek" instead of "If It's All The Same To You Babe Instrumentals, was on a Northern Soul NTS show. I heard it and immediately thought "Wow, so this is where The Go! Team get it from." There's definitely traces of this song on tracks like "Junior Kickstart" or "Bottle Rocket". I googled 'Go! Team Luther Ingram' and a few playlists from the main Go! Team guy popped up, so I wasn't far off!
XTC - Making Plans for Nigel This was a clue during the music round of a trivia night I did recently, but I'd never heard it before. But then this weekend I saw some people tweeting about it and their friends being like "Making Plans for Nigel rocks so hard." But I guess it was in Bandersnatch and L4YER CAKE.
Bangtails - Patron of the Arts This song is on a new compilation called Strum & Thrum: The American Jangle Underground 1983-1987 that was recently put together by Captured Tracks to try and highlight the type of indie music in the US that didn't start imprinting on people's brains until R.E.M. and other bands got their spotlight. Scott and I have said for at least 1 year now that some label should do a similar compilation but for Canadian indie from the 2000s. I put a playlist together for Adam that's just pre-2008 Canadian indie from that period, and there's so many gems. Honestly, I think I just want one for Montreal and one for Toronto, and the Toronto one should mostly just be a Blocks compilation. OR, What I wouldn't give for one of those Exploded Views books from Coach House about Blocks that also comes with a compilation. Please, I'm a simple man.
Sister Janet Mead - The Lord's Prayer Another NTS playlist, this one by Cindy Lee. I'd never heard this song before, but I already knew all the words, so that was a bonus.
Dirty Projectors - Empty Vessel Maybe not always Close Personal Friends, but we definitely move in the same Friend Groups. Friends of Friends, for sure.
Meitei / 冥丁 - Oiran I / 花魁 I Their album Kwaidan / 怪談 was on a Bandcamp list back in 2018, and I really fell in love with the song "Jizo / 地蔵." They just released their new album, Kofū / 古風 which has some way poppier songs on it like this one.
LAL - Losing Myself I remember when LAL's Deportation came out while I was at CFRU, but I wasn't listening to much electronic music at the time so I think it just went right by me. I was probably mostly listening to garage rock. This track is off of their album Dark Beings. "Dark Beings" the song is the theme music for the podcast Burn Out, which is what keyed me back into LAL, and I would also totally recommend!
King of the Hill S04E16 For some reason I've really held onto the image of Luanne skimming the pool as this calm epiphany at the end of the episode. But, in the context of a 22 minute sitcom, it really just zips by, and you have to take it as a given that she's found inner peace somehow. Like, you're told it as a fact, not as something that you feel alongside her. I guess I would've been like 11 or 12 when I saw this episode back in 2000? I don't know why it stuck with me.
A Lily - Endless Jasmine This was on a Spotify Playlist that Lis was listening to, but I can't remember what it was called or find it again.
Syreeta - I Love Every Little Thing About You I saw people talking about her album Stevie Wonder Presents: Syreeta on Twitter, which led me to her one before, Syreeta, which this song is on.
Lijadu Sisters - Come On Home This is on a great playlist organized by ARCHIVE AFRICA called Funk by Farhia. I turned up the low-end in the mix so that we can really hear the bass because one person in the YouTube comments said:
This is a song that I think could very easily end up in the credits of High Maintenance or something.
Riz Ortolani - Cannibal Holocaust Main Theme Last track from an NTS mix, this one is from Jocelyn Romo's horror film sountrack playlist from October. I have never seen Cannibal Holocaust and I don't think I want to.
Emma Tricca - Sunday Reverie This song was in S02E06 of Lodge 49.
Anjimile - Not Another Word Another person from a Bandcamp Weekly list. Musically, there's a lot of Sufjan here, so I shared the album with Kellin (who is a fan of Sufjan) who then said "its very cool," (sic) so I feel validated. It's always nice to know that people like the things you recommend to them.
Lodge 49 S01E04 I liked this show a bunch. It's very charming.
Lady Lazarus - ...And It Is All Right Close personal friend.
Shabason, Krgovich & Harris - Philadelphia Nicholas Krgovich is a close personal friend, but I don't know these other two guys well.
While space allows, I'm stashing my recent mixes and annotations in a Google Drive folder, which you can visit here: The Archive
