Hi Friends!
Boy oh boy oh boy. Not a lot to say with this one. We can't decide right now in this moment to go and put out wildfires, but there are other things we can do to work at making things better for others. I would say the below list is a "Do all of these things" list, not a "Pick one and feel better" list:
I've added United Way-NWT to my fundraiser if you want to donate to help people with the evacuations.
If you're in Canada, sign this petition to help support getting federally funded contraceptive pharmacare coverage.
Find a place in your community to volunteer. I like Shelter Movers, but you can really pick anywhere.
Go for a walk and pick up garbage in your community (no link available).
Call/text someone you haven't spoken to in a while and tell them you love them.
I get so sick of people complimenting me when I do any of the above things. I just don't like feeling like what I'm doing is special. I feel like I'm doing the bare minimum. If people aren't doing this, then they're doing less. (Yes, that's my problem that I have to rein in.)
It's also true that everyone is dealing with their own journeys, that people have their own reasons for not being able to do everything the way I see it, and that there are lots of smaller, less public things we do for our friends and families that make the world a better place. I have room in my heart to understand that as well.
I can hold both feelings and see them both as valid and not be mad about it.
Victoria has a friend who said something like that the goal in life is just not to cause harm to others. I don't think that's true (I think that's setting too low a bar). But it's not a horrible thing to believe.
