Mix Annotations - Arm Toner
Hi Friends!
It's Good Friday as I'm writing this (tbd when I'm sending this out), which means that Lent is over.
Lent, for heathen readers, is the time leading up to Easter where some people try to buckle down and bring themselves closer to God through things like prayer, fasting, and charity.
The day before Lent is Pancake Tuesday, and so even though I'm not religious, I do somewhat feel like if you're going to eat pancakes that day (which I did*), then you should also do Lent. I also like the feeling of living with intention, and of finding a way to have a practice that reminds me of all the more that is out there in the world beyond myself. So I did Lent. And for Lent I decided to give up all non-water drinks**.
Overall, pretty easy. I only broke Lent twice: once was because Lis brought bubble tea home and couldn't finish it (I hate food waste more than I love abstaining from things), and once while out at dim sum with Lis and her Grandma, where they kept pouring me tea. But these were both on Sundays (Lent cheat days), so I think that it's fine.
I'm not sure if not drinking water brought me closer to anything spiritual. I did feel pretty hydrated for 40 days and 40 nights. I thought a lot about how great it is to have clean, running water that I can easily drink every day. And I thought about those who don't, like people in Palestine who are trying to survive a genocide, or even people in Canada who are living under boil water advisories (and in many cases also trying to survive a genocide). I regularly felt grateful for my situation, and thought about how I could contribute to helping others access water. Did that bring me closer to God? I don't know. I think it did help lighten my teeth.
My first non-water drink will probably be water with the sugar-free Emergency-C packet that's been sitting on my counter for a few weeks. I can't remember where I found it, but I'm looking forward to not having to see it every morning. After that I'll probably just keep drinking water pretty regular. 9 out of 10 doctors recommend it.
*I made these protein pancakes with powder that Lis has had sitting around since she stopped going to the gym, and I gotta say, they did not taste very good.
**This is probably the first year my Lent wasn't "I'll give up candy" which makes this maybe my first Adult Lent.
