Matt Gullet is at it again with The Malefic Manor of Count Grigorovich! This is a 30-page adventure for 1st-level DCC RPG and Shadowdark. I got to hang out with Matt this past weekend at Long Con and he told me all about his new project (and a secret future project!) Here’s a quick blurb and the interview that I did with Matt:

The adventure begins in Horstburg, a lonely hamlet crouched in the shadow of the accursed manor and its fog-shrouded grounds. Whispers of strange lights, eerie sounds, and vanishing travelers fill the tavern air. The player characters are soon drawn—or perhaps compelled—toward the notorious ruins of Count Grigorovich’s estate, known among the fearful locals as The Malefic Manor.

How detailed is the town of Horstburg? Is this a “town with a problem” type adventure or is our focus primarily on the manor?

Primary focus is on the manor. I offer a number of hooks to get the PCs to there.
Though there are rules/encounters possible to and from the manor. There is an old school rumor table. The town has a tavern, and as we’ve reached our first stretch goal, will now have an extensive list of NPC hirelings.

What’s a wild moment from a playtest?

A savvy player in one play through (this has been played A LOT) let an NPC live, and gained a powerful/lucrative ally. Another player intentionally freed a great evil, and immediately made a pact with it!

It sounds like Count Grigorovich may have made some kind of deal with a devil. What kind of dangers await the PCs? Is this heavy on demons, or are you throwing all sorts of horrors at us?

There are some traditional monsters, some unique ones I’ve made, some demons of course, and non-conventional traps as well. Riddle, and puzzle that really fits the theme. I’ve created some new magic items that players tend to like.
