My Evil Is Law: NPCs and Scions

A d66 and d10 table to populate games

I continue to work on My Evil Is Law when the mood strikes me. For now, that means that I’ve written up a few lists of characters to help populate game sessions. Check out my previous posts on My Evil Is Law, covering the setting, core mechanics, mook gang generator, and adventure generator.

NPCs

Gargoyles S 2 Upgrade Recap - TV Tropes

When needing a random NPC for My Evil Is Law (or other weird science fantasy games), roll on the below d66 table. This requires rolling 2d6 and assigning one die as the “ten’s digit value” and one die as the “single’s digit value”.

11-16

  1. Robot Detective - Good at his job. Loves his dog. Always solves the mystery.

  2. Tribal Chief - Of one of the world’s ancient cultures that barely clings to life. If their village is destroyed, it will be lost.

  3. Alien Teenager - Typical teen. Prone to trouble. Usually seen in groups or on their way to find a group.

  4. Super Scientist - Probably invented something that he shouldn’t have. But he’d be really excited about inventing something to help you take care of that problem.

  5. Phony Warrior - A charlatan posing as a fearsome expert.

  6. Grandma - Has cookies and a cozy home. May need to travel to visit family.

21-26

  1. Lounge Singer - Sought after by suitors. Knows all the dirty secrets, but don’t kiss and tell.

  2. Sewer Conscript - Forces to work off debts/crimes. Occasionally finds something horrible or amazing.

  3. Space Warrior Princess - Her planet has been enslaved by the Evil Overlord’s forces. She seeks to curry his favor in exchange for her people’s freedom, but feels shame for the dishonorable things that she does.

  4. A Bear - Luck check to see if it is of the talking variety.

  5. Centipede Bounty Hunter - Can hold so many weapons.

  6. Factory Worker - Suffers banal oppression to provide for family. May be involved in the creation of mundane oddities, evil robots, etc.

Strongest Samurai Jack Characters

31-36

  1. Mobsters - Two big guys bossed around by a little guy.

  2. Back Alley Chemist - Offers services at a mostly fair price. Lots of good materials in the trash.

  3. Street Preacher - Tells of better days passed and worse days ahead. Hints at hopes in the future. May know more than you give them credit for.

  4. Mask Maker - These masks may be for amusement or for more esoteric purposes. Curses are more easily passed to another than they are broken.

  5. A Little Fairy - Unfortunately easy to capture. Can provide a wish, but it’s power is in inverse proportion to how recently it has granted another wish.

  6. Monk - A member of an ancient order. Dutiful to their pledged purpose.

41-46

  1. Motorcycle Man - Half man, half motorcycle, all attitude.

  2. Duelist Champion - Gets hired to act as champion for others. Undefeated due to their pickiness with jobs.

  3. Strange Shepherd - Leader of an odd flock (ex: giant snails, crows, etc). Very capable though uncouth.

  4. Honorable Hunter - The hunt is of importance and the prey must be worthy. All other aspects are but a distraction.

  5. Odd farmer - Raises worms, bugs, or other less naturally appealing protein sources. It’s honest work.

  6. Wind Whisperer - Their voice brings the winds and the rain so they must think wisely before they speak.

51-56

  1. Fish Royal - There will be not recompense for the polluted seas, but they may be other recourse.

  2. Scrapman - Trash can be made anew. Refurbished for refound utility or remade into surreal art.

  3. Once Multi headed Creature - A creature with at least one head, but also at least one stump. It mourns the loss of its symbiotic sibling.

  4. Droid - A nervous yet cheeky robot who’s clearly out of their element and out of their depth.

  5. Miniature Men - A thousand tiny men who collate into a single “body”. Incredibly moxy for their size.

  6. The Hunted - Sought by the Evil Overlord’s minions, they can never return home. They seek a path that may not even exist.

61-66

  1. Master Thief - They seek ancient treasures. They want money but may already have a heart of gold.

  2. Grumpy Wizard - Annoyed by technology, the deterioration of the world, the recklessness of youth, and just about everything else. Powerful but prone to angry outbursts.

  3. Street Vendor - Merchant of scrumptious food that you probably don’t want to know the source of. Friend to all sorts and subsequently a valuable information broker.

  4. Emotion Elemental - A vibe incarnate. May possess others or merely let its aura touch the many.

  5. Doppelganger - Looks almost exactly like one of the PCs. Might be a cool guy or might be the reason that the PCs get into trouble.

  6. Guy with an Obnoxious Weapon - Like a chainsaw or something. Manages to talk about it in every single conversation.

Scions

Cap'n's Comics: Thundarr the Barbarian by Jack Kirby

The Evil Overlord maintains a small group of lieutenant commanders, often called Scions, to more directly exert control over the various regions of the world. The tend to engage in petty sabotage and cold wars against each other for dwindling worldly resources and favoritism of the Evil Overlord. The number active Scions may vary as the Gamemaster desires. The below Scions are presented as options to include in a given campaign. These archetypes are not given specific names (but may in a more final version of MIEL), but are intentionally malleable to the tone and tenor of your own campaign.

  1. The Warrior Lord - A formidable reflection of one of the PC’s own backgrounds. Ageless due to a dark gift.

  2. Siren Snake Cluster - They grow as hair from the gigantic head of a decapitated deity. Their hissing voice is enchanting despite its unsettling nature.

  3. The Cursed Demon - A winged demon cursed to be human during the day. Her hatred of humans become self-loathing.

  4. The Body Thief - A psychic with the ability to switch into any living creature, effectively making them immortal.

  5. Ghost Robot - A scientist who lives beyond death. Only able to affect the corporeal world while in their mechanical body.

  6. Ruler of a Dead Universe - A warlord from a dimension that was destroyed by the Evil Overlord, now nearly satisfied in subservience.

  7. Xeno-Bonded - An alien parasite bonded with a earthling. The parasite grants great powers but gradually overrides the host’s personality.

  8. Mummy Sorceress - Awakened from her deathless slumber, she seeks an ideal vessel in which to house the soul of her beloved.

  9. Space Vampire - This world has the tastiest and most varied bloods of all the worlds that he has visited.

  10. Gator Don - A reptilian mafioso who eats those who don’t fall in line.

What level of detail in NPCs and villains is best for you playstyle? Some people like simple spark tables and others like detailed entries.

What Else’s Going On?

The Mouth of Mentius

An old-school dungeon crawl zine in the tradition of the Judge’s Guild, The Mouth of Mentius is 73 twisted, gritty rooms full of grid-mapped challenges. A perfect compliment for fans of Caverns of Thracia or Isle of Dread, this dungeon mini-campaign is historically inspired by Greek-Roman myth but with the otherworldly strangeness DCC gamers love.

TEST PATTERNS 2025

A community WHPA zine not unlike the Gongfarmer’s Almanac.
