Long Con 2025 Recap
TL;DR: I loved it
Once again, Long Con was a blast! It’s a small convention (around 200-250 each year) but a great one. It’s got a real heavy DCC presence, and the Texas DCC community knows it!
Thursday
I arrived around noon. First scheduled game was at 6PM but the gaming had already started. A huge group of us grabbed some food at the Tex-Mex place next door and the topic of discussion was games, games, and more games. Matt Robertson, the Texas Region Convention Representative for Goodman Games and my co-host on Rules As Written, arrived and we got to work setting up the Goodman Games booth. I didn’t have any gaming scheduled that day, so I spent the time catching up with folks like John Watson, Matt De Micco, Matt Gullet (check out his current Kickstarter!), and Eddie Bartlett. I did get into a couple games of Ultimate Werewolf.
Friday
I started my morning with a super-duper official meeting/breakfast with the other Inkslingers (minus Luau Lou who was unable to attend the con this year). We talked plans and projects for 2026, both things we’re doing on our own and things we’re collaborating on. It’s just a group of folks who get along well and do our best to support each other. After our meeting, I went back to the Goodman Games booth. Between sales, me and Matt conceptualized an awesome Xcrawl adventure idea. I got to do some more work on that but hope to turn it into an awesome Halloween one-shot.
I dropped into a Friday game that afternoon where we all played Dungeon Dwelling Creatures style goblins who were defending our goblin warren from adventurers. We drew our own warren, created traps, and fought the adventurers as they invaded our homes. Later that night I ran a playtest for a Goodman Games adventure that should get published next year. I always get some anxiety about the first playtest of something, but it went great! I made a few notes for myself, as I’d be running it again the following night.
Saturday
Saturday morning was spent at the Goodman Games booth and hanging out with folks. That afternoon, I dropped into a game of Weird Frontiers and experienced Not So Fast, Billy Ray! It’s a great adventure written by Brendan LaSalle. Glad to have finally played this one so I get to read the full adventure now. I’d skimmed it a few years prior but didn’t really remember anything except that it had a good bit of investigation in it. The game master was Sergio of DnD Lorecast. After the game, I wandered around and watched the end of a Xcrawl game where the PCs were playing professional monsters using the DDC rules. Judging from the smiles on all the players’ faces, it was a huge success.
That night, I ran the second playtest again. Folks solved the puzzle/mystery of the adventure a totally different way! That proved out that I’d successfully created an adventure that can be resolved in multiple ways. When I’m running an adventure, I know that I have a lot more fun when I also get to be surprised by the turn of events so very happy with how that turned out.
Sunday
I often run a rules-lite game on Sunday mornings but didn’t make that happen this year. Wish I could have gotten some WHPA in! But it’d been a long weekend and I was looking forward to getting home and sleeping in my own bed again. At the Goodman Games booth, we raffled off some special items like printer proofs for some Xcrawl modules. I took part in the trade swap; sold a few things, bought a few things. A few hours later, we packed up and headed on home. I spent the next day typing up my revisions to my adventure in preparation for Cyclops Con where I ran it again!
