Dungeon Con I

And our airport pre-con too

Goodman Game hosted their first ever convention this weekend right at their own warehouse. Dungeon Con was a great time that left me wanting more. I didn't initially plan to travel their, but traded doing some editing and layout for a plane ticket. Yes, you can pay me in airline points. Work trade is a beautiful thing! Anywho, I wanted to write about my experience, but if you'd rather listen/watch me talk about my experience, then head on over to either watch the Rules As Written episode where we recap our convention experience, or list to the No Class Podcast! For the readers out there, keep on scrolling down.

Friday

John Watson, Eddie Bartlett, Matt Gullet, and myself arrived at noon for our 2PM flight that got cancelled about 10 minutes after we made it through security. An hour was spent getting a new flight, which was scheduled for 2 hours after our first one should have taken place. Then that new flight was delayed 2 hours, which almost made us late for the layover we had to take, but then that was delayed an extra hour too. What would have been a 6:30PM arrival time ended up being 1AM. Luau Lou picked us all up and we got to our Airbnb as quickly as we could.

We had intended on going to GameQuest, a local game store In Fort Wayne, but we did Airport Con instead. This meant card games and discussing each other's future projects. Not quite what we wanted out of our Friday night but we made the best of it.

Saturday

After about 5 hours of sleep, we woke up to make a quick breakfast and left for the Goodman Games warehouse. A chaos lord helped us find parking. My co-host on Rules Against Written manned the registration booth and got us all our badges. Soon enough, it was time for the morning games. I played in The 7th Doom Quest of Delial Kroom, which was run by both Doug Kovacs and Harley Stroh. The players at each table had split-soul counterparts at the other table. When one died, they both switched tables. This quickly became a way to pass information back and forth so we could make plans.

The game began when kith from the Purple Planet began the invasion of Punjar. Our PCs all began in a brothel, spotting our mirror universe counterparts in the mirror. Harley's table was more wild adventures with cultists, drinking the yolk of magic eggs, disintegrating necromancer's, befriending giants, and stealing air skiffs for high speed dogfighting. Doug's game was less dice rolling and more trippy. I ended up being at Harley's table more so that's why I can offer more details but I had fun at both tables. In the end, we had to merge our split worlds back together. Mechanically, this meant that each pair of counterparts needed to drop an empty soda can at the same time. If the cans hit the ground at the same time, we both passed through the phlogiston barrier in synchronicity and survived. Unfortunately, I and my counterpart were erased from existence.

Afterwards, I was able to do what I was really excited to do: meet people that I've kindled online friendships with! I met a ton of the Goodman crew: Joseph, Alana, Matt H, Bob and Jen, and more! Plus so many fellow creators and folks from Discord: Mark, Diego, Trevor, Bryan, Alex, James, Chris, and so many more. I was happy to talk to everyone but also wish that I was able to chat even longer with folks! So many crazy ideas that could be hatched if we just had the time!

At the warehouse, I picked up my books from the Caverns of Thracian backerkit. Since they also charged for shipping, we were essentially able to use that as “store credit” for anything else. I grabbed The Seventh Thrall of Sezrekan, the yet unreleased funnel adventure that will be out on DCC Day! They had a great selection of ding-and-dent material, which ranged from a barely bent corner to torn up covers. Plus, all the regular and rare material that one could hope to buy! Unfortunately, I'm a crazy person who basically already owns all of that stuff so I didn't get much there. But I did paw through a ton of original art from Stefan Poag and Doug Kovacs. Colin Richards was also present, but I have an original piece from him already so I geared my budget towards Poag and Kovacs. I got these amazing pieces which I need to hang up on my wall.

After a brief nap and some coffee, it was dinner time. We didn't make it to the Goodman Games story hour, so instead headed back to our Airbnb to record an episode of the No Class Podcast! Then we played a couple card games and did a play test of an all goblins Dungeon Dwelling Creatures game. As level 1 goblins, each of us controlled two goblins. We had to bring honor back to our tribe by stealing the prize pie from a nearby human village’s pie festival. After lots and lots of silly mischief, we got that pie. Gonna be another amazing adventure in the DDC crowdfunding campaign. By the end of the game, it was 1AM.

Sunday

We grabbed breakfast and went to the airport! No troubles getting back home. I read a few of the adventures that I picked up at the con. The Seventh Thrall of Sezrekan seems like an awesome funnel! Get ready to pick that up on DCC Day 2025!

Oh, fear not folks who didn't get to come. Joseph said that the convention was a success from which they'll learn a couple of things. Dungeon Con 2 will be coming in 2026! And they'll be adding a second day of gaming too!

Check out a few more photos, over on the Goodman Games website.
