What's the best way to get your vote out if you can't vote on Election Day?

Many states that accept mail-in ballots require the ballot not only to be postmarked by a certain date, but to arrive by a certain date too (check your state's board of elections website or local voter registrar's office for deadlines). For example, in North Carolina your mail-in ballot will no longer be counted if it arrives after Election Day, even if it was postmarked beforehand, and in Virginia your ballot must be postmarked before or on 11/5 and arrive by 12:00pm on 11/8.

This was less of a problem in the past, but cuts made to the USPS under a previous administration now mean that there is no guarantee that your mail-in ballot will arrive in time if you send it now, even if the address is just down the block from your local post office.

But don't despair! Even if early voting has already ended in your state, if you received a mail-in ballot and can't make it to the polls on Tuesday, you may still be able to vote early by dropping it off yourself at a specified board of elections drop location between now and when the polls close in your area on Election Day (please check your local board of elections/voter registrar's office for the most accurate information, as some states do not let you drop off ballots at polling places on Election Day and times listed on unofficial sources may be incorrect).

Returning your mail-in/early ballot in person to a drop location listed by your state board of elections is now probably the most reliable way to make sure your early ballot is counted, depending on your state's voting regulations.

If you can/are planning to vote in person on Election Day instead, remember that no matter what state or locality you are in, if you are in line at or before your polling station's listed closing time, you have the right to vote, regardless of how long the line is or how long past closing time it takes—please be prepared to stay in line as long as you can!

It's also your right to cast a provisional ballot if there are any unexpected irregularities or unscrupulous challenges in checking your identity or voter registration, as long as you are at the correct polling location for your voter registration address and follow any written instructions given by an authorized election official to resolve the issue. Don't let anyone intimidate you; know your rights!
