Did You Know?

I apologize for the long period of radio silence. Like many of you, I have spent the last month and more trying not to be overloaded by the rapid and intense erosion of our civil rights and social safety net due to the depredations of the now-current administration while also trying to help those most at risk around me to the best of my ability.

The onslaught of these cruel and bigoted attacks has, by design, been overwhelming. As individuals, it is easy to feel like there is nothing we can do to protect ourselves and the people around us. This is their intention; to drown us in a deluge of cruelty and leave us struggling, disoriented, and disorganized. However, we do not have to follow their playbook. Every individual act of resistance, no matter how seemingly small, matters—if nothing else because it proves that we matter, and that we can resist. The very nature of getting involved in these acts connects us to community, where we can make the largest impact, because we are stronger together.

Here are 3 things you can do today. On their own, they may not change the world, but they may help inspire you to greater action.

  • Print and distribute "Know Your Rights" cards to protect community members from unlawful arrest, detainment, and family separation by ICE.
  • Call your senators and urge them to vote NO on the other agents of chaos the president is trying to put in positions of power, such as RFK, Junior who, if confirmed as Health & Human Services secretary, would dismantle public health initiatives and fact-based, life-saving medical treatments, resulting in mass disabling events, further abandonment of disabled people, and thousands of deaths.
  • Find a local group who is already doing the work in your area and ask how you can help. You may be able to do more than you know!
  • "Let us not value a false peace over a righteous justice."—Dr. Yolanda Pierce (she/her)

Donation drive: 20% of tea sales will be donated to Black-led nonprofits
(retroactive from Jan 20th through Feb 28th)

The current administration can try to erase Black History Month, but we can't let them stop us from celebrating Black excellence, working towards redress for the systemic oppression of Black people, or from supporting Black-led nonprofit organizations helping the most vulnerable in our society.

Starting retroactively from 12:00am Eastern on January 20th and through 11:59pm Eastern on February 28th, 20% of all online retail sales (excluding tax and shipping) will be donated to Black Alliance for Just Immigration and Lavender Rights Project. Donations are made after sales totals for the month are tallied. If you're stocked up on tea for now, you are welcome to donate directly to BAJI here and/or to donate directly to Lavender Rights Project here. Nonprofit organizations fighting against white supremacy, patriarchy, and oppression along all axes are at much greater risk right now due to the president's bigoted goals, and those directly helping people could use our support.

BAJI organizes and advocates for racial, social and economic justice for Black Americans and immigrants.

Lavender Rights Project elevates the Black intersex & gender diverse community through intersectional legal and social services.

    Black Alliance for Just Immigration
    Lavender Rights Project

Of course, the most direct way to support the most vulnerable people among us, and the most at risk in the coming years, is through mutual aid efforts and organizing around existing community-led initiatives. Even if you yourself cannot donate, volunteer, or organize, you can still help by spreading the word—it makes more of a difference than you know!
