April is National Afternoon Tea Month on the National Day Calendar! Afternoon tea is the term for what is often colloquially referred to as "high tea," which originally referred to a very different tradition.

These days, afternoon tea can mean many different things. On the simple end of things, a pick-me-up cup of tea and snacks to recover flagging energy can qualify as afternoon tea. It can also be an elaborate event hosted by a location, organization, or group of family and/or friends.

Afternoon teas that break the traditional mold often involve a theme or topic of discussion along with the teas and food, resembling a hybrid between "traditional" afternoon teas and the salon discussion gatherings of the Enlightenment era.
