Resting On My Laurels
Wow. Just wow.
Well not just wow. But you get the idea.
What a wild ride it has been.
I was ready to collapse. To recoil in. As I so love to do. But they called my name. “Men Love Horsies: The Musical by Devin Bateson” for best in “Indie Venue”? Damn! I didn’t think I’d win any awards. People had told me that they thought I might win one. But I kept saying “No I won’t”. I’m of the mindset that I can’t win awards. I’m not an award winner.
I’m just silly.
That first award shook me. Maybe it was shock. Or the constant feeling of undeserving I live with. Didn’t even thank people. Just smiled, mumbled and walked away. But then by a fraction of a hair I won another award. “Critics Pick”. Another award? What is this some cruel joke? This time I made sure to thank the usual people I thank after my show. The people that kept that horse running. My Tech Lexi who crushed it on lights and was just an awesome compadre to have.

Hell! She did so much work. She even helped me sell my merch!

I thanked the staircase crew. Who are like a wonderful family to me. They even gave me this magnificent horse piece of art they all signed. And of course I assume they painted it by hand.

And of course I thanked the Hamilton Fringe. Who have given me a place to create insane theatre.
Then a third award. A THIRD? What is happening? “Best In Fest”. I got up, ran to the stage and just said “What"?!?”
People were asking me “whats next?” And my only response was. “I go back to work in the morning”. Cause with all this hard work and turn paging glory. I still have to work my day job.

There’s always more people to thank. Cause although this was a one-person show. To quote the poet John Donne “No man is a horse-island”
So thank you to my girlfriend/manager Tracie. for the encouragement and space to to work on this show. And for trying never to see my show until it hits the stage so she can enjoy it and be surprised.
Justin Shaw and Diana Moser for letting me perform my show in their living room and offering me notes and encouragement.
Jeremy and Nate at TOC Records for hooking up the recording. Davey for recording it. Tyler Shazma for capturing video and being a gem.
Extra thanks to Lucy Winkle who covered two performances of my street performance of Everything is a Condo.

And of course “thank you” to everyone who took the time to come out. This Fringe has been a gauntlet and experience of a lifetime. My heart is full.
It’s been a week since the Fringe. And I have rested these weary bones. I still plot and ploy what my next game plan is. We recorded the audio of last three nights of the show. So an album is in the making. I’m also going to record the songs in a studio, so I’ll get them down all “professional like” as well.

I’d like to tour this piece next year for the Fringes in Canada if I can. Hell I would at least try to do this once out of the local Fringe.
So If you would like me to come to your town and do it let me know. I’d really like to perform this on a horse farm. Or, if you just want me to do some wild rando backyard show, I’d love to do that as well.
I did not expect this little one-man Horse-Musical to win any awards. Let alone three. I came into this show with the same goal I have with every Fringe production I’ve done so far. Have fun and don’t loose money.

So now I rest. Riding off into the sunset so I can go back to drawing dumb things like this:
