The Jojo Rabbit Discourse is Back
While many of us were furious with a list of the best romantic comedies of all-time making the rounds on Monday, the Jojo Rabbit discourse came back.
As I said in my 2019 film review, there's a tricky way of addressing the Holocaust and/or World War 2 through satire and humor but Jojo Rabbit does so in a perfect way.
I first saw Jojo Rabbit during the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. It was one of the best films that I saw in 2019—because Knives Out was not nominated for Best Picture during the Critics Choice Awards, I voted for Jojo Rabbit. When I told this to Taika Waititi before the show, the filmmaker gave me a fist bump. My main criticism is this: I like Thomasin McKenzie as an actress but the only thing that would have made the film even better would be to cast a Jewish actress in the role.
