Please Stop Asking Filmmakers About Superhero Movies
I’m not about to tell someone how to do their job but I think it’s beyond time that journalists stop asking filmmakers about superhero movies.
It’s one thing if it comes up naturally in the conversation but it’s a completely different animal when a journalist bluntly asks a filmmaker about their feelings on the genre. It’s a fine question for Kenneth Branagh because he directed Thor. But for filmmakers like Jane Campion, Ridley Scott, and Martin Scorsese? It’s not okay. Not now, not ever. They’ve never directed films in the genre so I’m not going to read an article where they discuss their feelings about the genre.
I’m one of those rising up to accept Chris Evangelista’s challenge. You will never see me asking filmmakers about superhero movies unless it’s something they bring up during the conversation. When I interview a filmmaker, I want to focus on their current project. I might discuss some of their previous projects if it’s something of interest to me but for the most part, I focus on the project they’re doing press for.
