Passover Is Coming
Passover is starting on Friday night and for some, that means revisiting films such as The Ten Commandments or The Prince of Egypt. Or if you’re up to it, you can find the 2000 NBC miniseries, In the Beginning, on for rental or purchase Prime Video.
However, none of these films/miniseries are going to be 100% accurate. If any of them come close, it’s In the Beginning, which I first discovered in the early 2000s. I revisit it every now and then more so than any of the other films. After watching The Prince of Egypt on Monday night, I spent my Tuesday evening doing a rewatch. It’s close to 3 hours in length but they spend the majority on Genesis than they do on Exodus. But even then, they get some parts of it wrong. Commentaries make it clear that Zipporah, Gershom, and Eliezer never make it down to Egypt and instead return to Jethro’s. In the Beginning gets this part of the story wrong but they come close to being correct in every other aspect.
My rewatch of The Prince of Egypt was my first time watching the film since I first saw it in theaters. I didn’t expect to write as much about the film as I did but when one is religious, it means watching with a super-critical eye. Here’s the sad part: they brought on religious consultants and STILL get the Exodus wrong. How is this even possible?!? My review is linked above and it’s close to 1300 words.
