Interviews Republished
Republished interviews from "Above the Line"
I was not expecting spend my Saturday night by republishing all of my interviews that were previously published on Above the Line. However, the sudden decision to take the site offline left me no choice. No writer wants to see any of their work go offline. Rather than lose them, I made the decision to republish with the disclaimer that they were originally published on ATL. I had the raw interview text on my laptop but it is only through the Wayback Machine that I was able to get the edited versions. My final ATL interview was not archived so that's the only one that I've republished with the raw text. Everything else features the text exactly as they appeared upon publication with one exception--I restored the original ending to my interview with The Afterparty executive producers Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Anthony King.
If you're seeing this before reading Friday's newsletter, this should catch you up really quick: The Wrap covered Ed's piece on Above the Line about Patrick not paying any of the staff. After I went offline for Shabbos, Patrick went public about nor expecting the strikes to have the impact that it did and shutting down the site in the "short term." How long the short term is, I don't know. It's because of this that I made the decision to republish all my interviews on SATM. Listen, no writer wants to be in this position. We put in so many hours--many of which are underpaid. Below the Line appears to be staying online but I don't know who would want to write for the site knowing what we know at the moment.
The ironic thing about the entire situation is that there are interviews that I only had confirmed because of publication on Above the Line. Despite being a transgender film journalist, I don't have the reach to get many interviews confirmed for Solzy at the Movies. You'd think I would but I don't. One interview confirmed for ATL during Tribeca never ended up happening because there wasn't time on the ground during the fest. The SAG-AFTRA strike started in July so any of those interviews were not happening. One of those films is finally being released but the filmmaker is only doing select interviews.
I'm going to be running on overload this week as I plan content on my site not only for this week but while I'm in Israel later this month. It's my first trip back since going on Birthright Israel in summer 2007 and I can't wait.
