Catching Up on the Classics
With what feels like fewer theatrical releases coming out, I’ve been using the time to fill in my classic film blind spots. Some of the films were previously honored by the American Film Institute so it’s always nice to mark a film as SEEN. I didn’t start writing reviews until 2013 and at that, I didn’t start up my own site until 2017. I’ll sometimes find myself rewatching a previously seen film and then writing a review for the first time.
On Motzi Shabbos, Saturday Night Movie Night turned into a first viewing of The Dirty Dozen. My review is timed to run with the film’s next airing on TCM. I saw where Sylvia Scarlett was airing on TCM and thought I would review it. Instead, I watched it more or less for fun. It was the only film starring both Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant together that I had yet to see. In doing so, it moved George Cukor into my most-watched directors of all time on Letterboxd with ten films. There are tons of films that I’ve yet to log, let alone mark as watched. I’m working to fill in the gaps. Most of my wall calendars from 1997 on are in Kentucky so I’ll get to them when I get to them. Meanwhile, I expect to make a dent in Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock’s filmography sooner than later. I have a number of Hitch already on hand but with Kubrick, it’s a matter of watching before they are erased from the YouTube TV DVR.
