Apologies For My Absence

I made a quick trip to New York last week for the NY premiere of Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio and then it was back to Chicago to cram before voting.

The NYC trip was pretty fun. Unfortunately, Disney sent out their Avatar: The Way of Water invites too late to see the film prior to voting. It isn’t just this but they didn’t even let Netflix know that they were going to hold screenings for CCA members on the same day of Netflix’s NYC premiere of Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. Some of my colleagues flew in early enough for the 1 PM screening but I landed around 2 PM and went straight to the hotel to relax for a bit. It was my second time screening the film but it was an absolute joy getting to meet Guillermo del Toro after the film. By my count, he’s now the 4th Oscar winner for Best Director that I’ve met after meeting William Friedkin, Damien Chazelle, and Jane Campion. I hope to meet Steven Spielberg during this year’s CCAs to make it director #5.
