COMMENTS:
The very first episode of THE HELLFISH BONANZA was pretty ambitious–I think Nelson & I tried to pull off about six different ideas. It’s fun as hell to collaborate with someone on a radio show again–I haven’t had a regular conspirator since Ronda & I co-hosted shows together in college. My favorite moment of this show was the scramble to edit an intro live with multiple different sources, which we mostly did, but we realized right before going on air that we didn’t have a first song picked out. We had spent all this time thinking about our show and failed to make one of the most important decisions. Stoked that El Muntz pulled through with the Jackson 5.
Our show this time around is definitely a continuation of our prior shows–Muntz hosted KJAHPDX, a show focused on roots reggae, funk, soul, and whatever he felt like, and my previous show NOBODY WANTS A LONELY HEART tended towards both modern and classic Hip-Hop and R&B, and whatever I felt like. On this first show, I felt like we did a pretty good job of showcasing different ideas and sounds. We had a short set dedicated to Christine Blasey Ford, played some of our favorite Hip-Hop releases from September 29, 1998, and fired up a KJAH block.

GUEST HOSTING STATIC + DISTANCE
HOUR 1
HOUR 2
PLAYLIST COMMENTS:
I was graciously invited by Joshua Justice of STATIC + DISTANCE, one of my favorite shows on Freeform, to co-host a show with him based loosely on spacey and/or folkie indie rock. I’d had an experience recently of having a song in my head by the band Duster, but not knowing exactly which song or record it was from. It was just a simple, fuzzed-out chord progression with a perfect resolution. The band doesn’t have a huge catalog, so a few songs in to the first side of Stratosphere, I realized the song I was looking for was “Constellations.” I’ve listened to their records thousands of times by now, but this gorgeous tune wound its way into my skull free from its context. So, my contribution to this set centered on the Duster song and other slow-core late 90s bands like Codeine and Bedhead. Also, while getting the show ready, I remembered that Pell Mell’s awesome album Interstate had a song called “Constellation” too, so they made perfect bookends.

OUR MOST RECENT SHOW, FEATURING SPECIAL GUESTS!
HOUR 1
HOUR 2
PLAYLIST COMMENTS:
In my many hours of radio experience, this was the first time I’d hosted a musical guest in the studio to interview and premiere new music with them. Muntz and I were honored to host local emcee A Mitch WDGAF and local producer Rah. A Mitch’s music has been played on my shows for the last year or so–he’s a really talented rapper with a great ear for good, diverse beats. Rah has been collaborating with him on some music that is coming out soon, and he played a sparkling new beat that reminded me of Kendrick’s “LOVE.” while Muntz mixed in a classic pleading Ghostface duet. It was the kind of magic that only gets made on community radio. Also played a set of PDX Hip-Hop, and capped it by letting A Mitch & Rah select songs to close the show out. One of my favorite shows of all-time.
