13: Goodbye, lonely hearts
Shed no tears for me, friends and fam! Tonight is the final episode of NOBODY WANTS A LONELY HEART on Freeform Portland. I’ll be joined in the studio by DJ Muntz, and we are gonna try to wrap this one up in style. I’ll be featuring new music from local talents Mat Randol, C-Los (ft. Kayela J & Young Shirt Mayne), Calvin Valentine, and A Mitch WDGAF, and also playing new joints from Open Mike Eagle, Lupe Fiasco, Father, EARTHGANG, and Noname. Finally, I’ll take a little stroll down memory lane and play the half dozen or so songs that best defined the No Lonely Hearts ethos.
Tune in at 90.3 FM in North Portland, or stream live at freeformportland.org. If you can’t listen live, I’ll send out links for streaming or download after the show airs.

COMMENTS: In the mix for this show, I played music that was in my head while I visited NYC or music that I purchased at record stores there. I love the freedom of walking and listening to headphones in a big city. The new Yves Tumor album was a great companion, as well as the new Don Q. I was also stoked to pick up records that are vital to my schema of the city, especially Boogie Down Productions “You Must Learn,” Fearless Four’s “Rockin’ It,” and Loose Joints “Is It All Over My Face,” the disco classic from one of Arthur Russell’s many alter egos. Also, that Marvin L. Sims song knocks. If you collect vinyl and you like soul and R&B, you should run down to Mississippi Records and buy the first three volumes of the American Soul Music compilations. “Danger” came from the penultimate record in that series.

My radio pal DJ MAPL was kind enough to cover me last week while I missed my show to see Liz Phair at the Crystal Ballroom. I’ll be returning the favor this coming Saturday morning (the 29th) from 6 am to 8 am PDT, and I typically stick to his format of playing Canadian artists and musicians. I think he did a great job of nailing the late-night vibe on his show; you can listen to DJ MAPL’s covering me last week here:

I also failed to include links for two other shows of mine covered by friends and other DJs. The week of September 5th, I was in New York and my show was covered by Sharky Blue and Davy Jones, the intrepid kids behind the program TREASURE HUNTIN’. Their first hour is here, second hour is here, and playlist is here. These young hustlers have been a gol-danged delight to be around, and they make some damn fine radio.
The week of August 1st, I also failed , DJ Muntz covered my show solo-style and served up a delicious heap of soul, funk, R&B and goodness. Here’s his first hour and his second hour.

If you are in Portland, you should come out to Mic Check at White Eagle Saloon on Thursday, Sept 27th. Mic Capes headlines, Fountaine has a set, and it should be sweet.
I’ll talk a little bit tonight about the inspiration for my show, and how it was largely all my reaction to the incredible records that came out in 2016 (Blood Orange, Solange, Frank Ocean, Beyoncé, A Tribe Called Quest, Mitski, Rihanna, Noname, Jamila Woods, always Kendrick, Angel Olsen, Chance the Rapper, Danny Brown, and on & on). When I moved to Portland in November of 2016, we knew a few people, but it was still a big transition. In Bellingham, I’d had to put about half of my records away (Josephine couldn’t leave ‘em alone!), so I made the stupid mistake of sorting them all by genre and then putting away all the non rock & indie rock. So, for a few years, all we listened to was our rock records.
Moving to Portland and having the freedom to be back on radio with no boundaires (except for the first 6 months, when my show was at 6 am and I hand to play music with no swear words) as to what I could play was pretty exhilarating. I really leaned in to Hip-Hop, R&B, Soul, and protest music as a reaction to the election, mostly as a way to help prop up my own spirits and hopefully spread some positive energy.
The show was named for a song by Arthur Russell (by the way, I made a Spotify playlist of my favorite Arthur Russell songs that are on that streaming service). “Nobody Wants a Lonely Heart.” It’s a funny phrase, I’ve whiled away hours trying to parse it’s meaning. For me, I decided it’s kind of a rallying cry, an offering of camaraderie and kinship. I hope you found some solace in the music I played, or maybe at least a new song or two.
See you on the flip side.
