06: Our world without sound
Because I’m on that weekly grind with my radio show, I’m back on the air tonight. In honor of Brian Eno’s 70th birthday yesterday, I’ll play a song of his and send birthday wishes via sound waves. I’m excited to play new stuff from the Chromatics, Snail Mail, and Mitski, and I’ll play old favorites of mine from John Cale, the Boss, and Snoop Dogg.

The archive at Freeform is down, so this show may be lost to the ages. I’ll see what I can do to find a file. Tried to be a bit more extemporaneous / less scripted with my show this week, instead of breaking the show into sets grouped by genre. I never know if it’s too much hopping around to careen from country to punk to Hip-Hop like a toddler on juice, but it keeps it more interesting for me to let the music take me where it will. Whatever I can do to avoid overthinking things, right?

Since I don’t have a radio show to sell you on this week, I would encourage you to check out my favorite show on Freeform Portland–THE SWEET SAUCE hosted by Sloppy Josephina. She keeps her playlists here, and her show this past week was a doozy. The FIRST HOUR and SECOND HOUR are definitely worth your time (same deal as mine, stream or download MP3 from those links). Her show airs every Tuesday morning at 8 am, which means that I get to turn it on when I wake up the girls first thing, and we listen to it while we have breakfast and get ready for their day at school. Then, I get to drop them off at school and enjoy THE SWEET SAUCE in a house to myself. It’s become a part of our ritual to start their week at school, and some mornings find us throwing an impromptu dance party in the living room because Sloppy Josephina picked out the perfect Michael Jackson song. Her show pushes me to make the very best program I can, and her musical selections (especially ’90s R&B and old soul) have been my consistent favorite since I discovered Freeform.
Freeform’s donor drive starts this coming week! Next week on my show, I’ll be joined by my radio pal Nelson a.k.a. DJ Muntz. He hosted an excellent roots reggae show on Freeform (called KJAHPDX) bright and early on Saturday mornings. He was one of the first DJs I met and befriended at the station, and he’s a lot of fun, so I’m excited to share the airwaves with him. DJ Muntz and I are DJ’ing Beech St. Parlor on Wednesday, May 30.

The ladies had a pretty sweet time at a birthday party for their friend Cleo, who turned 6 and is in the bicycle picture at the end of the letter. Cleo and Jos met when they were babies (not even a year old!) and they hit it off immediately. They make up for lost time whenever they reunite, and it’s a pretty fun dynamic at play with all three girls.
Thanks,
