The There There Letter: Smizing, Scent, and Sauvignon Blanc

Three things from DAH.

DAH is me, David Anthony Hance. I write, organize, plan, produce, manage, direct, act, sing, promote, and make change (not the coin kind).

First up this week, Smizing …
I was introduced to a verb this week, one with which I was previously unfamiliar: To "smize" means to smile with the eyes. That's something that seems like a good thing to do when we're all going about with masks covering our mouths and noses. I've been practicing, and emphasizing the eye-area during a smile takes rather a lot of muscle control. Of course, I have the benefit of being able to smile with my mouth, too, even if it's hidden while masked. Apparently coined by the model Tyra Banks, the "smize" is an important skill for models and actors. And mask wearers.

Second up this week, Scent …
Smell is sometimes referred to as the Fifth Sense. It's also a sense strongly connected to memory (those aromas that recall times and people past). I've had several friends with short-term and long-term (permanent) anosmia, the inability to experience scent. Their situations seemed horrible to me. Well, now in our current era, we've become scent-challenged through mask-wearing (but keep on smizing!) and I just learned that one aspect of COVID-19 is the loss of smell. Stillness of scent memory seems a cruel additional consequence.

Third up this week, Sauvignon Blanc …
Sauvignon Blanc can be an aromatically distinctive varietal wine. Nowadays Sauvignon Blanc wines are seldom overspiced by oak barrel aging (although there are still outliers). From the lean, minerally character of Loire Valley (FR) Sauv Blancs, to the gooseberry/cat's pee distinctiveness of Marlborough (NZ), to the bracing steely-yet-ripe-fruit generosity of the Columbia Valley (WA) bottlings, I often find myself craving Sauv Blanc when the weather turns warm. Fun fact: DNA profiling shows Cabernet Sauvignon to be the love child of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc.

That's all for this week.

Instructions for living a life:
Pay attention.
Be astonished.
Tell about it.
