The There There Letter: Postcards, Passion, and Pooh

Three things from DAH.

DAH is me, David Anthony Hance. I write, organize, plan, produce, manage, direct, act, sing, promote, and make change (not the coin kind).

First up this week, Postcards ...
Postcrossing, which has been around since 2005. I've come across it before (I know this because when I registered recently my email was already in the project's system). The project was created by Paulo Magalhães, who liked to receive personal (non-advertising) mail. Who doesn't? The project is simple: Send a postcard, receive a postcard. Mailers and recipients are selected randomly from among the 750,000 participants in more than 200 countries. This week I've mailed to Birmingham, England and the Russian Republic of Bashkortostan. There's no cost to participate, except that you have to mail postcards to receive postcards. I've got my stock of postcards and postcard stamps ready to go! https://www.postcrossing.com/

Second up this week, Passion ...
The Passion Economy: The New Rules for Thriving in the Twenty-First Century, a book by Adam Davidson (creator of NPR's Planet Money). This is quite an interesting book, which I can sum up with: In the 20th Century it was possible to profit by improving efficiency and cutting prices … that commodity economy doesn't work any longer, except perhaps at an enormous scale … today, better to find the unique way you and your company can create unique value, perhaps for fewer customers but at a higher price. Well, wine's been that way for quite a while. And there are a couple of wine-oriented chapters in the book (one of which I scoffed at, but I find that's often the case when you know a subject intimately). It's an interesting and encouraging read. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/239718/the-passion-economy-by-adam-davidson/

Third up this week, Pooh (Winnie, that is) ...
"You can’t stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes." (Winnie the Pooh). I can't believe that Winnie the Pooh Day (18-Jan-2020) came and went between TTT newsletters. It just doesn't seem right to let another year go by before celebrating our favorite bear (actually, I like Paddington rather a lot, too … that hat! those marmalade sandwiches!). Here's a rather nice piece from The Idler, a year ago: https://www.idler.co.uk/article/why-we-could-all-use-a-winnie-the-pooh-in-our-lives/

That's all for this week.
From Mary Oliver's poem "Sometimes" …
Instructions for living a life:
Pay attention.
Be astonished.
Tell about it.
