First up this week, Isochrones …
Isolines, Isodistance, and Isochrones. It's always interesting for me to learn new words. My word for this week is isochrone, which brought along with it its fellows: isolines and isodistance. I wanted to figure out how far I could get from home in two hours. Drawing a circle on a map wouldn't work since access by road is not generally equivalent within a constant border (some roads are wide and fast, others are winding, and natural obstacles get in the way of road access). I stumbled upon the concept of the isochrone: Driving some number of minutes from a chosen point, how far could you get? I generated quite an interesting map, which you can see
HERE. And I got more ideas about local driving adventures.
What's an isochrone?

Second up this week, Inhibitions …
Most of us have boundaries: Limits as to how far we will go. Sometimes those may be legally or religiously specified. Sometimes we're physically or financially limited. I find myself wondering where some of my boundaries … or inhibitions … have come from. Merriam-Webster definition of inhibition:
1: an inner impediment to free activity, expression, or functioning: such as
a: a mental process imposing restraint upon behavior or another mental process (such as a desire)
I'm certain some of my inhibitions are self-protection (or the illusion thereof). I suspect others of my inhibitions serve me not at all. So, while self-distancing I'm giving the matter some thought.

Third up this week, Ibiza …
Sheltering in place we've recently streamed two escapist Mediterranean-island-setting shows, one set in Ibiza (White Lines on Netflix: a crazy, drug-fueled, caper-mystery) and one set in Mallorca (The Mallorca Files on Britbox: a silly, light-hearted cop show). I looked at a map and realized with wonder that Ibiza and Mallorca are near one another, with Ibiza sitting between Mallorca and Benidorm, a holiday destination on the Spanish mainland. Benidorm is also the name of a long-running British sitcom we enjoy (same guests returning to an all-inclusive resort, each summer equals one season of the show). This part of the Mediterranean seems so appealing. Ibiza and Mallorca are two of the Balearic Islands. And, in addition to sun, beaches, and wild nightlife, interesting wines are grown here, too. We've enjoyed a few Mallorcan wines in the past, but now I have more to seek out, from sunny Ibiza and beyond.

That's all for this week.

Pay attention.
Be astonished.
Tell about it.
