On the Eve of Winter
Winter encroaches ever closer (at least for those in the Southern Hemisphere) and with that, the midpoint of the year trails closely behind.
Despite its reputation, the call to winter is the perfect midpoint to pause, reflect and realign your yearly endeavours. From a creator’s stance, winter offers a time for thought and contemplation. Ideas of the human imagination are revealed or explored into potential, tangible projects, inspiration is accumulated and new techniques or fields are attained through research.
As the season turns and we get closer to being halfway through 2026, I wanted to reflect upon my current state of events and the changes I aim to follow for the latter half of the year.

Straying from the Path
If you’ve read my previous entries, I made the move to New Zealand, where I have now as of recently, been here for 2 months!
What were once warm, sunny days has transitioned quickly into windier, darker mornings; winter whispers in the air. As the leaves are plucked from the branches and drift in the colours of autumn, so too must my current mindset and priorities need to adapt to the changing conditions.
Getting acquainted with the new location and culture is but one aspect to adjust to, but my lifestyle and way of living have also needed to change; where I go, what I do, and how I spend my time. The many small things that seem insignificant at first accumulate into a series of new unforeseen problems to solve; plans falter, habits and routines loosen or life circumstances aren’t going according to plan.
Establishing a new life routine and exploring the surrounding region has affected what I have prioritised in my day-to-day. Although this adjustment has enabled me to experience new sights and greater independence, it has unfortunately made it harder for me to remain consistent in my creative pursuits.
Thankfully, as the seasons shift, this transitional period helps to remind me of what I want and where to redirect my focus towards.

So how will I follow the flow of the seasons and renew my efforts for the year? Here’s 5 strategies I will adjust course:
Re-engage my creative muscle by returning to work on my creative projects daily 🖌️
Reflect and re-prioritise what’s most important for me now - both in my personal, creative and work life 🔎
Strive for learning something new everyday and build upon my pillars of knowledge ⚒️
Be smart with how and where I spend my time across the day and week ⏲️
Embrace the flow of the day and the season - maximise my opportunities and energy but know when to slow down and rest ⚡
Coincidentally, this is also part of the lesson I was unravelling during my March hike up along Orewa Beach. Only then, was it a matter of becoming acquainted with the new location. Much of the hike along the beach and nearby estuary were shrouded in a fog. Though it reduced visibility, the mist served as a brilliant element to the headlands!

Winter may be wild, cold and dreary, but from within, comes a moment of opportunity to embrace the shifting season and reorient your compass.
In what ways has the shift in seasons made you re-align yourself?
