Sky's Vic Park Newsletter #19: what's happening around Town and traffic in Carlisle
Kaya!
I hope that you’re well, and enjoying the shift to cooler weather as we move from Bunuru to Djeran.
This newsletter is shorter than usual, covering:
A quick peek behind the scenes,
How to get involved locally; and
An important new addition to the March 18th Ordinary Council Meeting agenda.
Behind the scenes
It’s a big couple of weeks for me at council: last week was the annual meeting of electors on Monday night (which I’ll write more about when we get the minutes), then on Tuesday night council had our regular meeting with the CEO before a long workshop covering a couple of important issues. Next week I’ll be MCing at a citizenship ceremony, doing the Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday night, attending my first Integrated Transport Working Group, and (hopefully) going to the Harmony Day picnic (while remembering that this is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination).

March 18th Ordinary Council Meeting
In the previous edition of my newsletter, I outlined some of the important items coming up on the agenda in March.
There’s been the addition of a new item that I want to let you know about before the meeting, as it was only brought to our attention late on Friday afternoon:
Item 17.1 Mayor Karen Vernon - Carlisle Traffic Management Issues
This item (on page 75) requests an update on the Town’s progress on conducting a review of traffic management in Carlisle; and on whether the Town is proposing to install any further traffic interventions or calming treatments within Carlisle in the next 18 months. I’m in favour of moving towards a clearer picture of how to effectively manage traffic flows through the area and developing a plan for safer streets in Carlisle.
This item also calls for removal of the speed humps installed on Archer St, Carlisle between Planet St and Orrong Rd. While I understand that these speed humps are particularly clunky, I have concerns about the idea of immediately removing them without understanding the impact that this might have on safety for pedestrians in the Carlisle Town Centre; the costs involved; and what the longer-term plan is for ensuring that Archer Street serves as a safe local transport corridor for the whole community. If you want to let us know your thoughts on this before 18th March, you can reach council here.

Simple modifications of city streets, such as expanding sidewalks, adding crosswalks and planting greenery, can protect pedestrians and promote sustainable travel.
We are all connected
With the state of the world as it is, it’s easy to forget that you can make a difference. Your care and kindness help to stitch your communities together, and if you can reach a little further you add to the tapestry of hope for a better future. If you have money to spare, please consider donating to help others through an organisation like the UNRWA or WFP. You might also support climate justice through Seed Mob. If you have time to spare, take action for human rights through an organisation like APAN.
That's all folks!
Thanks for reading! As always, I encourage you to get in touch if there's anything you want to ask about or discuss.
best wishes,
sky.
