People like to think that injustice corrects itself. That the worst among us are somehow self-impeaching. Bring the truth to light, lay it out so people can see, and nature finds a way. How’s that worked out for us so far?
If the truth was enough, the streets wouldn’t be full of people hoarse from shouting over indifference. Desperate for anyone to hear them, this cacophony is ignored until they bring too much attention to the cracks in our flawed systems. Instead of sealing those up, resources are spent silencing the squeaky wheels and suppressing their pleas.
We are told many stories about justice that make it sound inevitable. Then why is it always just out of reach? These fairy tales keep ending right before the denouement. Goalposts move because it’s easier than admitting how many of these principles are defunct in the hands of corrupt authorities.
That’s why it’s up to us to reject their framing. Seek out fresh perspectives, construct new meanings. Break cycles and show the world that there is another way. Avoid situations where you are at their mercy, because they are merciless in their quest to uphold systems of exploitation and control.
There is no holy grail that will magically change the minds of those who have ignored all that has come before. Artifacts of truth, displayed ceremoniously on a wall, won’t pierce the veil of lies. Like Excalibur, they must be wielded.
It’s not about convincing the oppressors, it’s about exposing them for what they are.
