Why I Still Work From an iPad
With the new M1 Macs out I have gotten a lot of questions as to why I still work from the iPad. The new Macs are faster, have longer battery, and they can even run iOS and iPadOS apps. But they don't quite capture the magic of the iPad for me.
I recently dusted off my day job issued MacBook Air (I believe this is the 2019 version). I put Big Sur on it and I felt nothing. I ran back to my iPad happy to be using my favorite computer again. Every time I try going back to the Mac I'm just not interested. I don't think there is any one reason as to why.
The iPad is by no means perfect, but like I always say, that's exciting to me. I like that the iPad still has room to grow. It's figuring itself out. I like computers and I have loved seeing the evolution of them in my life.
The development community behind the iPad has come up with some of the most interesting apps ever. Doesn't matter what you want to use your device for there are apps there. I just did a series on my daily iPad workflow. This covers all the apps, hardware, and services I use with my iPad and there’s a lot.
The modularity of the iPad has been really interesting as well. In one moment you have a tablet. Then grab the Apple Pencil and you have a canvas to write or draw on. Then you can grab the Magic Keyboard and you have a laptop. Then plug a monitor into the iPad and you have a desktop. Though I will fully admit the iPad needs better external monitor support. Just a few years ago none of these extra modes were possible. The iPad was just a tablet. Who knows (well Apple) what the iPad will be in a few more years.
At the end of the day though the iPad is my favorite computer and it's the one I want to do all my work from. You may have a different favorite computer and that's ok. All computers are good computers, just like dogs.
Shortcut: Drafts Grocery List
Durning this pandemic I've been really careful to minimize my exposure to the outside. Part of that is being smart about grocery shopping. What I do is spend sometime going through my kitchen and taking inventory of what I have. Then I make a list of what I need.
That is where this grocery list shortcut comes into play. I can add everything I need to the list. Each item needs to be a new line. It will then separate all the items adding a checkbox in front of them. Then it will build the list in a new draft. In Drafts I hit the eye icon at the bottom, then it will stay on that draft when I'm in the store. This way when I do go to the store I can get in and out as quickly as possible.
