Special Update - July and August 2024
Although we may be stating the obvious, many of us are experiencing troubling times. Despair, pessimism, and negativity are way too easy right now, but moving towards positivity, empathy, and connection? That takes hard work and persistence.
Our meetup is no exception - we are currently holding a Patreon pledge drive to help us with an unexpected increase in our Meetup.com bill. Although we have plans to migrate the group to a different platform if necessary, we hope to continue to create inclusive, accessible, and affordable meetups.
To that end, we’ve assembled a schedule of events for the next few months. We’re including two from our colleagues, but we hope to provide comfort and connection for Chicago (and other) Doctor Who fans. This is not our day job, but a volunteer effort to build community for Who fandom.
You may have already seen our scheduled pop-up virtual screening on Meetup and Facebook. If you can join us on Tuesday, July 23rd at 7:00 pm CST via Zoom, please join us. (If you’re not in Chicago, we encourage you to check us out)
On Sunday, July 28th at 1:30 PM, we will be holding our first in-person ice cream social at Jeni’s location in Andersonville. (The address is 5306 North Clark). Please let us know via Meetup or Facebook if you can make it, and we hope to see you there.
If you need a great at-home Friday night activity, we encourage you to check out Down In Front. They hold a regular MST3K-style movie riffing stream on Twitch at 8 PM CST, and their events encourage audience participation! For more details, visit https://www.twitch.tv/downinfrontlive
Our friends at Raks Geek are organizing a special fundraiser on Friday, August 9th. We’re not part of the planning, but we think the cause is noble and want to encourage people to attend. For more details and ticket information, please visit Eventbrite.
On Sunday, August 11th at 7:00 pm CST, we’re holding a virtual screening of a classic Doctor Who story. For more details and to RSVP, please visit Facebook or Meetup.
Finally, our second ice cream social will be held at Eiffel Waffle’s Lincoln Park address on Sunday, August 23rd at 1:30 pm. It’s a great place we visit every year, and we encourage you to join us! Details via Facebook and Meetup.
It’s easy to see our meetup as an entitlement or a diversion. It’s neither - it’s a chance for people who share in their Whovian fandom. We will continue to provide welcoming spaces for Doctor Who fans of every stripe.
After all, the Doctor once remarked, “There is no such thing as an ordinary human.”
